Pip vs. Honda Accord Plug-in

Some people just can't wait. Many here bought their Prius plug ins out of state because of Toyota's limited roll out. Don't know if they were willing to pay a mark up, but Toyota dealers seem to stick to the MSRP for the Prius.

If I had the choice, I'd take the Accord any day over the PiP. I was able to hyper mile my regular Civic to 45 mpg and 62 on my PiP subtracting EV so I don't think I will have a problem meeting EPA with a hybrid Accord. Its a small price to pay for all the extra luxuries and the detriment of trunk space. We can always take DW's car for family trips.

But damn $41k is too rich for my blood. That's $15k more than my base PiP. I'm guessing selling a top level trim is the only way Honda can make money with this car.

 

Except for a few EV/ICE logic programming differences, it is like a Volt. I call the HAP the Japanese Volt.

It is a basically an EV at low speed. And hybrid (with a clutch like the Volt) at high speed.

 

You would get a little better Fed tax credit compared to PiP. I guess in CA you would get HOV access depending on how long they go with that incentive. For other states, I am thinking Hybrid Camry will be hard to beat.

 

HAP seems sort of like vaporware. Been out since January. haven't seen one anywhere. Pretty much no one seems excited about this or the soon to arrive Accord Hybrid.

 

Traded in 09 prius for the accord plug in. Looooove it, loved the prius, test drove a base model plug in prius and the Camry hybrid. Wife liked the Camry the feel of a "normal" style car, but we didn't wanna go backwards in efficiency or technology. That night she found the honda online. We are in ct, so looked for some Honda dealers close to boarder that had the accord plug in to see and drive it. Found on drove it loved it. Took us 4 weeks to actually find a dealer to get it from. We looked at an advanced prius plugin looked cheaper inside then our 09. That sold us on the honda. We ended up getting in from a dealer in Brooklyn about 115 miles (2 hrs) away they gave us a full tank and we have only filled up once since driving it home we are at 1100 miles and about 90 mpg and still on that full tank. My wife drives 12 miles to work set up a plug outside for work and bought a changing station for the house. Charges in 30 minutes at home(cost .36 to charge). So far great car

I also looked into one a few months back - great looking car and solid inside but to me its not even the competition due to the price being almost 10k more. I mean I'd like a Tesla too but that's not happening...

btw dealer told me an hour to charge w 240v but if you're getting 30 that's great

 

Paid msrp $40,570. Took us so long cause they were giving not a lot for prius as trade in. Toyota offered 12,200 when we test drove the pip and camery. Honda was offering like 9000-10500. Car max offered 10000. Finally got 11500. Was surprised by how little was worth. In the Hv mode getting like 45-48 mpg. But mostly running in ev mode. Gets like 14 miles in pure electric it's farther then what you think when doing local stuff.

The charge with the leviton charging station is 30-40 minutes easily. 40,570- the approx 3400 tax credit. Makes like 5000 more then the pip. And we had the advanced with jbl, leather Big Nav screen which would have made almost same price as honda.

 

Do you have a charging station or the charger the pip it came with?

 

it came with 120v evse and takes 3 hours. i purchased a level 2 and that takes 90 minutes.

 

How much was the base model?

 

Saw my first Accord Plug-in few days ago in Hayward, CA. Really looking forward to the Accord Hybrid too cause these all new Accords look really nice inside and out. Accord is my favorite mainstream sedan and I've looked over Camry, Sonata, Altima, Fusion, Malibu quite a bit. Nice that the enthusiasts pretty much like driving Accord the best (except for maybe Mazda6). But, it's a look but do not buy affair for me. Already spent too much on new cars and well, the Prius is getting the job done.

 

Sales are still miniscule.

From the chart at December 2013 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card, they aren't breaking 100 month, while the PiP's averaging 1K/month.

From January 2014 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card, PiP had 803 units sold in Jan '14 vs. 27 Accord PHEVs.

 

The PPI is also selling in 12 more states. The Fit EV is available in more states than the Accord.
At this point the Accord PHEV seems to just be a compliance vehicle. NY allows Honda to get some cold weather data, and make it a little easier for people willing to have it shipped to them.

 

I'm glad the Honda is selling in low quantities. Good for resale value

Depends.... the low sales could also point to a lack of demand in the future, which would lead to crappy resale value.
