In order to provide a clearer picture to New Yorkers about the cost of charging your car, I created a database/survey feature which is going to collect this info, and make it easy to search this data.

If you live in NY State, please take a minute to add your data (only a few fields, registration isn't required).

This is the high value. Normally it's about 0.14/kWh and has been as low as 0.11/kWh.

Hardly seems worth it at those prices. $0.11/KWH would be considered high over here. I wonder how low we could go if we had TOU pricing implemented. I've still got a dumb meter with the spinning wheel.

The utility for Long Island (Nassau & Suffolk counties) is now PSEG Long Island, which is not on the list at the survey page. It replaced National Grid a few months ago.

Once again, many of us aren't primarily concerned with cost savings.

Hmm, PSEG Long Island is what LIPA used to be, right? I pulled this list from the NY gov website, am surprised it has this kind of errors. I added PSEG to the list, thanks for letting me know.

I only created the database yesterday, and haven't advertised it on any forums (am using the smart PriusChat folks for feedback before really launching it ;))

Thanks! The change from LIPA to PSEG was officially effective only on January 1st, although it was in the works since Hurricane Sandy.

I entered my rate calculated from last month's bill, 22 cents per kWh.

I'm assuming everyone is just combining the cost of supply + cost of delivery, right? Should I split the rate between delivery/cost, since you can shop for different suppliers? I just put it in the comments section for now.

Who is your provider? Have you looked at your cost recently?

On PGE's website, I'm seeing rate components that add up to $0.10322 for the first block, then $0.11044 after that.
Looks like PGE offers $0.07489 at the lowest, $0.16219 at the highest.

I'm just over the river in Vancouver, and use Clark Public Utility. The rate is $0.08041/KWH.

My parents use PGE and their billing and rates are similar, unless something has changed in the last couple months.

That bill of Redpoint's is a paragon of clarity. Good for them.
    Inexpensive electricity, too.

If you divide the total electric cost by the kWh used, the rate is .106, no? I assume the 'basic charge' is effectively the delivery charge that many of us see. Alone, my supply charge is only .054.

Our NYSEG bill is a marvel of complexity, but by dividing usage into total paid, I get 12.062 cents a KWH without the wind power subsidy, and 13.01 cents with.

If the goal is to know how much it costs to run an *EV, the fixed costs of the electricity bill should be excluded in calculating the cost/kWh.

Rather than parse the bill, if the unit costs have remained constant and you do not have tiered pricing in the past two months some simple algebra would do the trick:

    Bill #1:
    Total cost = Fixed + kWh*kWh_rate

    Bill #2:
    Total cost = Fixed + kWh*kWh_rate
    ---------------------------

    Two equations, two unknowns.

On Long Island (ex-LIPA-suction, now much the same with PSE&G) there are no fixed billing charges. Both energy cost and distribution charge are per kwh, and the recent total is near 22cts per.

That does not sound too complicated.
