No, not complicated, nor very economical.

Is 'economical' a PC term for inexpensive ?

To the folks that have posted their rate, thanks! If your rate changes, let me know, and I can change it, or register on ChargeNY.com (highly encouraged if you are in NY anyways), and I can give you ownership of that record so you can change it anytime.

No, the basic charge is not for delivery, but just the charge for having a meter and an account in the system. Delivery and transmission would have to be rolled up in the price per KWH since those costs vary with usage.

Calculating cost per KWH by including the fixed costs is a mistake. Calculating that way increases the cost per KWH the less you use it. You could essentially have an infinite cost per KWH as your use approaches zero.

Yes, but it still must be accounted for, even if it is billed differently than those who pay delivery charges directly. Of course it varies with usage when that cost is fixed, but it is still part of paying your electric bill. Saying you pay 0.08/kWh is not accurate if you are leaving out the other costs of the service.

Doesn't NY have a Public Service Commission that publishes the amount of these tariffs, taxes, fees ect ? That said mine never match what WV publishes.

It's a PC term for "can't give away PIPs".

Portions are variable, so, not in any useful way.

Think of it this way: how much will you pay for one more kWh ?

The tail of the bill (the kWh marginal cost to the consumer) is of interest because people want to know the fuel operating cost for the PiP.

Example: Let's say I live in a place where per month, fixed costs are $25, a kWh costs 10 cents, and I used 100 kWh before I bought my PiP. In my hands the PiP travels 3 miles on a metered kWh.

Question: how much does it cost me in electricity to travel 3 miles in the PiP in EV mode ?

I believe the cost of the power alone is 9 cents a kwh, with the rest being delivery fee, service charge, wind power charge, etc. Since we are never going to use just one, or three, or ten KWHs in a billing period, I think I prefer my calculation.

The fixed costs are irrelevant, unless you're off the grid. You have to have a meter, and the cost is the same whether a person uses zero electricity, or 1MWH.

10 cents, which is what I calculated the cost to be to run an EV here. I figure $.03/mi based on my rates, or about 1/4th of the $0.11/mi I pay for fuel in my TSX.

This would be true if we all paid the same service charges. We don't.

I agree, I subtracted the fixed cost which didn't depend on the # of kWh delivered, then did the math, or it just won't make sense when using little electricity. So far the numbers look right tho.

That said, maybe I need to figure out a way of redesigning the form so people can report this, but I definitely need more input on this if people want this changed.

I couldn't find it, I tried, even the Utility names were outdated in some cases. As other people mentioned, there are other variables which they don't account for, so I figured a searchable database of actual numbers would be more useful.

Some people have a fixed delivery charge, some a delivery charge per kWh.
If you have a flat rate, it doesn't matter if mine is $10 and yours is $15, they should be excluded when considering how much an EV adds to your bill.

If the delivery charge is something like 1 cent/kWh, then it should be included as using more kWh will raise your delivery charge.

Unfortunately utility bills can be very complicated and every utilities is different as well.

I understand how it works, but still believe it's disingenuous to discount fixed costs. They are still part of using any electric device. Imagine if gas stations required a monthly payment of $50 but charged .50/gallon less on all the gas you bought. Saying that you were only paying say $3 rather than $3.50/gallon for one car because you 'have to pay the charge anyway because the whole family needs gas' would not be representative of the true cost of the fuel. You'd look at the entire number of gallons you bought in a month and include the fixed costs in your calculation.

Let's say you were hypothetically allowing people to charge at your place and charging them at your cost. I don't know about you, but I'd take my entire monthly bill, divide it by the number of kWh used that month, and that'd set the rate. I certainly wouldn't suck up the fixed costs entirely myself.

The cost of electricity varies from the time of usage as well as the amount.

I agree with zenya that we should include everything. Gas price at the pump includes everything.

When comparing cost per mile between gas and electric, including fixed cost become more relevant.
