Bought a 2010 Three...Or Is It a Two?

Today I bought a 2010 Prius with 45k miles from a "no haggle" dealer chain. Thanks to the forum for the information I've been using in my research!

I have recently been comparing trim and feature levels while researching my purchase. My Prius was listed as a Three, but there are no bluetooth buttons on the steering wheel, and the radio does not have the JBL logo on it. But it does have the satellite radio antenna and seems to have in-dash speakers that are working. From my research I had expected that all 2010 Threes would have the JBL logo and the bluetooth controls as well as the dash speakers and antenna, and that Twos would have none of the above.

I had already decided that I would get an aftermarket plug-in bluetooth kit for hands-free and streaming audio, and my Three was priced as a Two, so I don't really care that my car doesn't have it, but I am curious about the discrepancy. Did my car come out of the factory like this, or did someone along the way have reason to replace the steering wheel and head unit? That would concern me as to why it was necessary, and I can return the car for any reason within 5 days if I find reason to worry about it.

This is a common mistake by dealers all over they clearly don't understand the difference. Can you take it back and see if they will refund you some because of false advertising? My 2010 Pkg. II has in dash speakers and satellite radio and is definitely a two

I had a 2010 II, and just rechecked the original brochure. A II has six speakers, single CD player, and is SAT capable (antenna installed) but does not have SAT actually built in to the receiver. A III has eight speakers, multi CD player (4 or 6 CDs, depending in which system it is equipped with), and SAT already integrated into the radio. And BT on the steering wheel.

Can you actually switch the radio to SAT? When there is no active subscription, I think it still has some audio message or basic useless channel. At least, I think my 2012 with SAT still had something playing when I let its subscription lapse last winter.

I've got a III, no question. I bought it, checked specs, and they all match.

There's a couple-three JBL logos in and around the speakers and radio; further, there's bluetooth cell phone buttons (speak, hang-up, and dial) on the left side of the steering wheel. That feature is pretty much why I got a III.

Look under the front passenger's seat. If there's not an electronic box in there (the satellite receiver), then not only is it not a III, it's really not a III.

It will not switch to SAT, only AM. Ok, I didn' t know that the Twos might have the antenna, and I thought 6-speaker was the enhanced audio setup. So I am satisfied this is a factory Two, and although it was listed as Three it was priced like their other Twos, so I am happy with the price and features, and I am happy that things weren't messed with.

    Thanks!

Edit: Just saw kbeck's post. Nope, no box under the passenger seat. A Two is the feature & price point I wanted, and I got that, so I'm happy. Thanks!

Isn't the electronic box on floor underneath passenger seat the JBL audio amplifier?

It's actually neither. In 2010, models were designated by Roman Numerals so the question is is it a 2010 II or III.

Only 2010 went by Roman Numerals, beginning 2011 they went with Two, Three, Four etc.

You're probably right; I just knew that one had to have more than a II to get the box. :)

Didn't they change to Two, Three, etc ... in middle of 2011 model year as the Prius v release was approaching in about October 2011? Wondering if they called it II, III, etc early in 2011.

No, AFAIK, the 2011 MY has models labeled as Two, Three etc from the get go. I'm thinking that when the 2010 came out in May 2009 they didn't know at the time the Prius v would be called the Prius v or else they wouldn't have used Roman Numerals. It's confusing, yes, but if we get the word out and inform people of what they in fact have it helps curb further confusion. Same goes with calling the Prius v a Prius V. It's not an Oh My God thing but using the lowercase v and letting people know its lower case helps curb more confusion than Toyota has already caused.

And I want to say it's not only Toyota who does these 'dumb' things. Look at Infiniti. They came out with a completely new vehicle in 2013 called the JX35. The very next model year they changed their naming nomenclature and renamed the same vehicle to the QX60. Exact same vehicle but a totally different sounding model name.
