Mileagae this winter is worse than ever

I don't grill block either as my wife is the primary driver and I want to keep it safe and simple for her.

I generally see low-40's in winter, high 40's+ in summer. This winter here in VT has been especially cold and snowy so I'm seeing very low 40's regularly (this tank is actually at 39mpg so far with 2/3rd tank to go). It's not wildly out of average (this is my 4th winter with the car) but I certainly feel your pain.

I'm not a martyr, I won't forgo a comfortable interior temperature to save a few MPG. Plus getting around in all the snow requires a lot more power application (if you diddle around too much the traction control can bring you to a standstill, momentum is often key to avoiding that). So between heat, and morning warmups (defrost the windows) and the constant resistance of snow covered roads, it's not surprising to see the lows.
Almost 56k miles tracked...

I haven't been tracking steadily for a while, my wife tends to "top up" half empty tanks, or not reset the trip odo after a fillup, etc. I don't hound her about it anymore, not worth it.

I took an average ±2mpg overall hit when I switched from the OEM LLR tires to the non-LLR Conti All seasons I'm running now. I think the handling and durability upgrade is worth it though.

 

No worries. I stopped tracking my Volt since the software does it for me. Frankly I hate looking at it because my life and living situation has been all over the place which means charging every day was not possible and as such my average tanked! Sort of depressing but I'm back on the upswing now.

You're efficiency is fantastic any way you look at it so better to remain silent with regards to your wife's driving style and fillup tendancies.

 

If you still want to keep track, switch to using the odometer on Fuelly instead of the trip miles. I've always done the odometer because its too easy to forget to reset the trip meter or unhook the battery and have it reset. As long as she keeps the receipts, you can add them in when you fill up and get the average over those fillups.

 

My numbers are generally considered garbage here on PriusChat. but they jibe with literally dozens of other Prius owners in my area that I've spoken to. Lots of hilly highway travel, almost zero stop-and-go, months and months of snow and cold temps, etc. The car is meeting the estimates I made when I first bought it, we are very pleased.

My usage is going to change significantly in about 6 months. My son is moving to the local school, and that means my wife can take the bus to and from work again (since she won't have to deliver him to the old school, which extended her daily commute.) It took us a little over 3 years to hit 80k miles, it might take us 3 more to hit 100k.

 

Thanks, I didn't know you could do that. Still, I'm happy doing it every few fillups now. It so rarely changes and the percentage that the on-board computer is optimistic is very regular so I can keep a general eye on things.

 

With the cold, short trips, winter gas and blasting through several inches of snow for the last couple months, my city mileage is 36. 45 on the highway without a problem, but it really suffers around town.

 

So we have super highway mode, stealth mode... all these cool ways that the Prius helps up hypermile...

But Toyota forgot the Super Snowstorm mode?! They dropped the ball on that one.... lol
