Not necessary. I had directed that comment to HalW as he had suggested the 2004-2009 North American market Prius suggested it was ok to use 5W-20 or 0W-20.

The Japan Domestic Market Gen II Prius was allowed to run 0W-20. Outside of the JDM, it was not.

    Hi All,

To update, in mid nov '10 I asked to Toyota Main Dealer (TMD)what oil was used in my Toyota, as you know I received response that it was 10W40 as oppose to 5W30 recommended by 2005 Toyota owner manuals. I was also advised that for €150 I can do service done(fine). I became curious so I have asked couple more questions to TMD, here are my questions:

    ====================================================
    Dear Sirs,

    Re: Toyota Prius

I also have couple questions regarding oil change, service maintenance which I have described below.

Could you please help to answer the following questions:

    1) whether Toyota Ireland require me to keep service maintenance intervals carried out in authorized Toyota garages in order to keep the 8 years hybrid warranty?

    2) whether my Prius still covered under 8 years hybrid warranty?

    3) would it be possible to change oil viscosity and start using oil 5W30 rather that 10W40, note: current mileage reads 124,600kms ?

    4) Recall regarding Water Pumps - the recall campaign, are the '05 Priuses sold in Ireland affected by this recall?

I would be greatfull if you could help answer above questions.

    ====================================================

after 8 emails and over one month, I have received the following response, however still without stating what is included in the service for €150.

here is response email from TMD:

yes you have to keep your vehicle maintenance upto date by a qualified mechanic/ garage and keep a full service record of parts and labor.
    your warranty is as follows:
    8 years / 160000km
    hybrid vehicle battery
    battery control module
    hybrid control module
    inverter with converter
    hybrid vehicle transaxle
( the 3 years manufactures warranty is now over )
the oil for your vehicle is the PREFERRED oil which is stated in your owners manual.
yes your vehicle is in the affected vin range and needs to be booked in at your earliest convenience. Tel. phone number xxx xxx xxx between 9am and 6pm.

    kind regards

    =======================================================

So two good news, first good news is that it appear my '05 Prius is still under 8 years Hybrid Warranty (as I have full service history details of Toyota Main Dealer service intervals).

Second good news is that I can now book my prius for Water pump recall.

Let's see how we ( or I should say TMD/Toyota Main Dealer in Ireland) go from here... I really want to get proper customer service and value for my money that I may have to spend on my prius.

Could anyone tell me what level of service is required to maintain 8 years hybrid warranty?

According to my dealer I noticed that there are several types of service (much of them is inspection only)

i.e. Oil+filter cost about 87euros and basic service cost 150 euro (it includes oil +filter plus visual inspection)

How do you guys maintain paperwork to be covered under 8 years hybrid warranty?

As far as the viscosity, if that is what Toyota dealers in Ireland are filling then there must be a good reason. Unlike the North America market Prius, the ones sold in the rest of the world have a viscosity chart that is based on ambient temperature.

For your expected ambient temperature, the semi synthetic 10W-40 should be fine

I personally wouldn't worry about it

As far as paperwork, it looks like the printout for the vehicle should be sufficient

    to update:
I've done service at Toyota main dealer and the dealer has changed (upgraded) oil to: 5W-30 at extra cost of €7 on the top of standard price of oil. I was told by service manager that Oil included in standard service is semi-synth oil 10W-40. - it's intresting that dealer in Ireland uses cheaper oils while servicing Prius as oppose to Fully synthetic more expensive engine oil.

The pump recall campaign allowed me to get new pump done at no extra cost during the car was serviced.
So far no problems reported while upgrade to Fully Synthetic 5W-30 from 10W40 at Toyota Prius, ODO @129k kilometers.

    Toyota recommends:
    5W-30 2001-2009
0W-20 (only comes in synthetic) 2010 and up

    I use 0W-30 (Mobil1) on my 2005.

I have contacted Toyota Ireland. Was told that the lowest recommended oil type for Prius in Ireland would be 0W30.

I did use 5W30 so far and had no problems, my car has 145k kilometers on the odo at present.
Hoping to switch before my winter trip to 0W30 for cold starts.

However the confusion is when it comes to what type of 0W30, here are some examples to what is available online in Ireland (toyota wants €120 for 0W30 oil/ filter change at dealer):

Not sure why castrols have different grades: ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5 and C2, C3

Maybe some of you can answer or help to pick correct oil or maybe this site have some other recommendations. Mobil 1 doesn't seem to be available.

5W30 is perfect for your normal driving, and it should be available in somewhat more affordable brands compared with 0W30. The 0W30 however will be a little better for your Poland trip (mentioned in your other thread). It should flow better during the cold Polish winter starts, but still hold it's viscosity well when you're giving it a bit of stick on the autobahn.

The C3 grade is a very low ash formulation which is best for some modern vehicles like diesels with particulate filters. It's not really any advantage on the Prius and some of that "sulfinated ash" is a by product of really useful anti-wear additives. I'd recommend the A5/B5 spec'ed Castrol Edge. The ACEA A5/B5 specification is pretty stringent and requires a very stable oil with very good anti-wear properties and it has to be energy conserving as well. It's a really good spec.

Thanks uart, it's just my internal desire that the Castrol EDGE 0W-30 (ACEA C2, C3)
have mentioned in the product description:
''This oil has been specifically developed with performance reserves which deliver longer lasting technology over extended drain intervals of up to 30,000 miles.''

Ok they're both really good spec's, you cant go wrong with either one. It looks like the C2/C3 variety is a long drain interval oil. These typically have more base (acid neutralizing) additives. It wont really make any difference if you're still doing the standard oil change interval though.

Anyway, either one of those would be great. Is there any price difference?

It appear to be exact same price for each of both castrols @£39.98 / 4litres.
It comes from UK, so I would need place order soon.

    Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone has advice on which engine oil I should use for my 2005 Prius with 203K kms. I live in Perth, Western Australia (Temperature range: -5 to 40+ Celsius).

Last change, I choose Castrol Magnetec 10W-40, even though many shops recommended a higher viscosity oil (maybe 20W-50) for older engines (to reduce oil consumption?). However I think a Prius engine wears much slower than a non-hybrid engine.

I choose SAE40 as the high temperature viscosity because it seemed that the recommended
maximum operating temperature of SAE30 wasn't high enough (~35 degrees Celsius?)

A question: I'm not sure why high viscosity is desirable at high temperatures. Won't that mean more
    friction, heating, and wear?

I've read the posts here, and am wondering if 10W-30, or 5W-30, is better for saving fuel, but concerned about the maximum operating temperature.

    cheers,
    Dean

Here is some interesting information about the SAE standard (attached)

    Hi Dean,

I live near Tucson, AZ which has summer high temps of ~110 degrees F (43 degrees C) and winter lows of ~ 40 degrees F (4 degrees C). I use 5W-30 full synthetic oil, such as Mobil 1 or Valvoline SynPower. In North America, 5W-30 is recommended for all temperatures and climates that can be experienced in this continent.

I would certainly avoid oils with maximum viscosity of 40 or 50 because there will be substantial additional friction caused by those thicker oils. However, older engines are intended for use with those thicker oils. For example I recall my 1976 Volkswagen Dasher and 1988 BMW 325iC both used 20W-50 oil.

The only reason to use such thick oils in the Prius would be if you had an excessive engine oil consumption problem. My car uses 1 US quart per 3,000 miles or so, and I do not consider that excessive considering the car has logged 168K miles.

Hi Dean. Unless you've got huge oil consumption problems then no need to go any higher viscosity then 30 weight with the Prius. I've been running mine on 5W30 for the last 150,000 km without any issues at all. Like any car though, it's always a good idea to check the oil regularly and top off as needed.

Here's a few oils readily available here in Australia that I think are fairly good.

    1. Shell Helix HX7 AJ 10W30
    2. Valvoline Durablend Dx1 5W30 (Dexos1 Approved)
    3. Castrol Edge (A3/B4) 5W30 (ACEA A3/B4 Approved)

Thanks for your advice Patrick and uart,

My engine seems to have no significant oil consumption problems, so I will probably go for
one of the 5W-30 or 10W-30 oils that you recommended.

    cheers,
    Dean
