Found this baby gekko in there yesterday & he's still crawling around.

    1) Are there weep holes or other things that he could have crawled in / can crawl out of.?

    2) Does the bulb assembly connect to the outer surrounding area? - I could remove the bulb, but it is not clear if there is a tiny gap between the two zones for him to come to the bulb opening.

    3) The instructions for removing tail light assembly do not work for 2012 Prius (there seems to be a tab at the bottom still holding it in place)

    4) Took it to the dealer but the techs were as puzzled as i was & did not know either how to get him out. They said i had to take the entire bumper off, to get the tailight assembly off as it is held in by two tabs from the inside of the bumper. And even if i got it out they did not know how to get the gekko out of there.

    Wow. That's so strange!

According to this video, you'll only need to loosen the bumper cover.

If your car is under warranty, I would let the dealer take care of it.

i just crossed 41K miles (no warranty) . So unfortunately the fella chose a poor time to crawl in there. I'm just so surprised, I've heard of moisture getting in, but this...seems to be screaming factory defect.

remove the light bulbs and hopefully he'll find his way out......but he'll end up in your car.

You could play terminator and use a small piece of glue trap for mice and stick it into where the light bulb would go. After he gets stuck, you just have to take him out.........kinda sad.

I got to exactly that point (loosening the bumper) but no way to pull it out. (seems it's different for the newer models). There is a tab at the bottom holding it in.

Took it to the dealer, they say has to be removed from the inside - after full bumper removal- which will be 2+ hrs labor & then i can get the almost fully removed assembly out.

Getting the gecko out, that they had as no comment. But they called all the tech's in to look & took loads of pictures. :)

That would be great, but looking at it, i'm unsure that the two zones are connected. Any drawings or broken assemblies that would indicate that they are?

Why don't you just take a light bulb out and stick a piece of paper or straw into it. See where it ends up. It should be connected.....try the backup light bulb.

Dealers are full of shit as usual. Just follow this and this important tip for removing the taillight.

    Thanks ! That worked.

The compartments are connected, but not enough to get a straw / rubber tube through though. I was able to fit a tie wrap sideways through the gap. Not enough to suck / coax the gecko through.

At the risk of angering PETA, have you tried a shop vac?

Remove the taillight and all bulbs. Let it sit overnight out in the open and maybe it'll find its way out.

Whew ! Thanks. That was a godsend.
I finally managed to get the assembly out.

Looks like it made it's way in through the LED board area location (which is not fully sealed.) & that has a channel to the front via the top arrow like tip

I now have the uprooted assembly upside down, to coax him through that & into the back area.

Have tried that for two nights, with a torch on through the bulb holes to coax him there, with no success. But I finally managed to get the assembly out so I'll try to get him out through the top channel which leads to the Led board in the back.

Gekkos are exothermic so you'll want to make his current location too hot or cold for him and where you want him to be just right.
