From what I've read, Jersey has several exemptions for auto sales tax. It's bizar that the state wouldn't consider the compelling value of 7% potential sales tax lost (for example, tax of $100k / or $7k) that the state would simply be pissing away to a neighbor state ... that this revenue would be more valuable than lost (future voting support) good will with the stodgie-traditional dealership network. wow

Sales tax on cars is typically paid in the state where the vehicle is registered, not where it is sold.

Teslas would be exempt from state tax in NJ anyway.

No you're missing the point ... I was trying to say that Jersey could rewrite zev legislation so that electric cars over $50,000 (for example) would still have to pay sales tax ... despite being clean cars.

They still could. With Delaware having 0% sales tax, neighboring states collect a sales tax upon initial registration. Pennsylvanian even asks you to pay a use tax on anything bought in Delaware, through mail order, or over internet on the annual tax form.

Ouch, just shows that Arizona doesn't have a MONOPOLY on having stupid legislators (wink, wink)!

It didn't help that Tesla put their shop up a block in from one of the busiest car dealer highways in NJ. That pretty much put them on the map with the other dealers.

The career of politician has a monopoly on stupid. It's across the board. It's knows no boundaries, borders, or aisles.

I hold politicians in contempt as much as the next guy, but to be fair I point out that the turkeys were *voted* into office. To quote the great Forrest Gump: Stupid is as stupid does.

True, but my point is even the very best of the politicians are pretty bad.

This isn't a law. As mentioned above, the law is that the auto manufacturer with franchised dealers can't sell directly. The dealer lobby went through the governor's office and the MVC to regulate the size of the showroom, the number of cars on display, and the location of the service dept. Just on these points Tesla's properties are too small, don't have enough cars, and don't have service facilities.

The MVC also voted to change the regulation before hearing public comment.

Typical backdoor politics. If you can't get your way through legislation then do it through regulation.

That just means that at it's very best, the public is pretty bad.

I would partially agree with that, but not sure how you got that from my statement.

Well, we the electorate choose the politician. Whatever we think of the politico must be a direct reflection on those that put him/her in office.

This would be true if we could choose anyone we wanted to represent us (we can via write in, but it will never happen) instead of only being able to choose among those who make a career out of politics. I guess my bigger point is that career politicians as a group are much more slimy and unintelligent than the average citizen.

In almost every election, there are candidates that we've never heard of. Remove the incumbent by voting for the unknown. Next election, rinse and repeat. We could get rid of the career politicians that way but few, if any, will vote them out.

We can choose anybody who wants to run. I'll vote for you :)
And while true that the career politicians have lobby money, we the electorate can choose to listen to candidates live for free rather than watch TV adverts. Or read political platforms. Or research the candidates on the internet. Or crowd-source grass roots political campaigns. Or talk to our neighbors.

Instead we watch slick TV adverts managed by big money and are manipulated and ignorant. Really, no one to blame but ourselves.

And frankly, while career politicos tend to corruption, they do overall mold themselves to the electorate wishes. Why do you think all the Repub candidates are anti-environment and climate change denialists ? They know where the votes are.
