Traded in the PIP for a new 2014 Volt...

    Traded in the PIP for a new 2014 Volt Tuesday.
    No knocks against the PIP- just wanted more EV range.

    Big thanks to PC Danny, and all the regulars for having taught me so much about the PIP! I think I managed to squeeze every last MPG out of the PIP using what I learned here.

    Here’s my “lifetime” stats from my excel sheet, for the record:

    Congrats. For your commute, Volt suits better, assuming you don't need 5 seats.

    Do you have the last EV ratio screen with kWh and gallon consumed?

    Keep us posted about your stats.

    We have two SUV's for large loads- so 4 seats will be fine.

    I've always reset Trip "A" at the beginning of the new month, but I kept a running Excel sheet since I bought the car.

    Will do!
    Went to work (28 mines) on a full charge- had 12 miles remaining on the EV battery!
    So far I've gone to work and back home three times (Wed, Thurs & Fri) and drove back from the dealership for a total of 205 mi on the car... the engine hasn't started since I've owned the Volt!

    It's an amazing car- I may be able go a full month or longer without the engine ever starting up.... :)

    I looked at a used Volt with only 17k miles that was listed for $23k. It was tempting, especially with PV, but I really need a full back seat and my wife didn't like the feel of the Volt interior. I ended up buying a used 2010 Prius IV for $16k and figured I'd drive it for a while and get immersed in the Prius family and see what the 4th Gen brings with PIP. I do love the Prius, but the Volt is a sharp car.

    Does your co-pilot qualify for the HOV lane? :D

    99% of my driving is single occupancy- and I have three females in the house, all just barely over 100Lbs so no problem fitting two of them in the Volt back seat.

    That being said- there is much less rear seat legroom in the Volt vs the Prius.
    If you have boys, adults, etc... that regularly would be back seat passengers in the Volt- bring them to the showroom before you sign on the dotted line...

    Nice Volt. Sounds like it fits your use perfectly. Put some miles on that ICE and make sure it breaks in properly and has no issues!

    I enjoy our Prius. We live in snow country and need an Suv. In the past we purchased Jeeps and had poor experiences from a quality standpoint. My wife drives the Suv and agreed to try a Chevy Equinox a year ago. It has been perfect so far only returning to the dealer for oil changes. GM quality has come a long way. I could see a Volt in our future.

    I've only seen one Volt on the LIE- and he's always in the left lane doing 70mph+.

    Gm lowered the base price of the Volt from $39,995 to $34,995 (including destination fee) this year- and then there's the big $7500 fed tax credit for the Volt because of the 16kWh battery- so now you're down to $27,500 for a car that get's 38-40 real EV miles per charge at 65mph.

    GM added "Hold" (in addition to "Normal", "Sport", and "Mountain") mode in 2013.
    "Hold" lets you "Hold" the battery power and uses the ICE instead to save battery for congested cities (a carryover from the European Volt- the Opel Ampera) or burn off gas if you need to. I have a feeling with the normal driving I do- I'll have to use "Hold" mode sometime in the next two months to burn off some fuel.

    Is that tire pressure recommended or have you raised it like we do in the PIP? And what about rattles?

    That's how the car came- we did the Onstar Test call after my dealer shakedown run, so the tires were warm on the 18th when Onstar did the diagnostic. In the mornings when I check the TPMS via the display they've been at 39psi front and 38psi rear- but they get up to 42/41 again during my commute to work.

    None... thank God!
    It's almost unbelievable considering my first 2012 Prius Five w/the 17" tires (nick named "the rattle trap") and the 2012 PIP with the 15" tires which I had to work on often to do away with most of the rattles.

    Chevy uses a rubbery type dash and surrounds in most of the car which doesn't rattle like the ultra hard/thin plastics in the Prius. It's extremely quiet even at 65-70 mph... and no rattles... even at below freezing temps!

    I got $20k for the PIP on trade- with the added tax savings from taking $20K off the $34K (not including the $7500 fed tax credit) Volt it's real trade in value was $21'725.
    It's currently up for sale at the Chevy dealership for $24, 288.

    It's much less stressful with 40 EV miles available for my 28 mile commute- I know the ICE isn't firing up - it also doesn't have the power range line that makes the PIP's ICE fire up if you call for too much EV.
    Supposedly the Volt's top speed is 101mph all EV.

    They've been there since the 50's- kind of an institution around here.
    It was very stress free dealing with them.

    Yup, I read your mods on that "feature" somms...
    I've already set it "very low" to only use the ICE for cabin heat at 15 F deg or below.
    The way I commute- burning some gas now and again wouldn't be a bad thing... :D

    Not sure if you've had a chance to register your new Volt over at voltstats which will track your lifetime stats.
    My overall MPG dropped like a rock earlier this year when I took a cross-country 2400mi round trip but my CS or charge sustaining (basically ICE mileage) MPG still close to 40...
