Coming home from a ballgame last night I stopped for a red light. My Prius shut down and wouldn't go ready. All kinds on lights and a small PS on the MFD. Couldn't get in neutral so I was stuck blocking one lane of traffic. AAA towed me home about 30 minutes later. Funny.. by then he got it into neutral with my fob plugged in. It still had multiple lights lit. I don't own a code reader.
Today about 12 hours later it comes ready with no fault displays!!! Any ideas with my limited information?

I'm going to drive back and forth on my drive way. I don't trust any distance drive till I find the cause.

anywhers .. You can tell I'm from Kentucky !

Check your 12v battery voltage at rest (should be at least 12.5v), with a current load (should stay above 12v) and in ready (around 14 volts) and report back.

Check the coolant reservoir for the inverter. Look to see if the fluid is moving inside the reservoir when the Prius is in "Ready" mode.

What you described sounds like the inverter got hot and shut down. A failed inverter pump will cause that problem. No movement of fluid in the reservoir is a telltale sign of a failed pump.

Watch the video below. That will give you an idea of what I am talking about.

Best of luck to you! I hope this helps you.

My voltage readings are 12.4, 12.1, 14.3 Battery is 2 1/2 years old

I also see movement in the inverter reservoir. Not sure how much motion I should see.

"All kinds on lights and a small PS on the MFD."
PS means that the power steering has a problem, at minimum. Next time this happens, take a sharp photo of the warning lights or else note exactly what they are.

It is possible that the DTC can be retrieved by your local Toyota dealer, if you want a headsup about what the problem might be.

I'm at 87,273 and about 3 months until the end of the traction battery warranty, so I hope it is bad. Getting it towed in for Toyota service check today. I had it running for 15 minutes in the driveway. I hope they can still read codes.
    Will post the results.

2006 year vehicle. 87,000 miles. Is it still on the original 12v?

Toyota said 13 DTC's stored, none permanent. He couldn't tell me what they were. They're going to test drive it tomorrow. When I pick it up I'm going to see if anyone remembered any of the codes.
I don't feel warm and fuzzy about the problem being found tomorrow. I did order a mini VCI cable for future use.

Toyota test drove it for 60 miles (a worker took it home) No problems found. I just drove it home. It's working fine right now. I did get a printout of the DTC codes. There are 18. Here they are: P3108, U0100 twice, U0111, U0129 twice, U0146, U0293 twice, C0200, C0205, U0073, U0123, U0124, U0126, U0121, B1421
    Any suggestions?

DTC C0200 and C0205 were logged by the skid control ECU and show there is a problem with the front wheel speed sensors.

DTC P3108 was logged by the hybrid vehicle ECU and points to a communication problem with the air conditioner amplifier or the inverter that powers the AC compressor.

The various Uxxxx DTC point to various CAN communications problems. When the various ECUs cannot communicate with each other, the car will shut down which is what you experienced in your OP.

Since the problem is intermittent, this will be difficult to figure out. Any flood or accident damage experienced by the car in the past?

(This is the type of problem that can easily result in you towing the car to the salvage yard because the cost to resolve can be very high. It might be necessary to replace the entire vehicle wiring harness which will be a high four-digit repair cost.)

I've had no flood or accident damage. I bought it used February of 09 so I've had it over 5 years. Other than recalls and a warranty ICE water pump replacement, it's been trouble free.

For what it's worth, I did have the CanLog battery monitor connected to the diagnostic port when this happened. Any chance it hosed up CAN communications?

Absolutely. See what happens when you have nothing plugged into the OBD-II port.

I had a similar thing happen. In traffic going about 10mph. No power. (ICE or electric) Was able to pull off the Cross Bronx Exp. to a shoulder about big enough for the Prius. Shut down, waited about 20 seconds and powered right back up. I did order a new 12v immediately after this incident and Steetsideauto had it to me the next day--PA shipping. Knock on wood, not another repeat of this. My battery was the orig. 3/2008 manuf. code.
