I guess I can try to call dmv for the license plate number on Monday. Anyone did that before? Monday should be the the 9th day since I bought the car. I bought PIP for the Hov sticker, if I can't get it, my wife is going to kill me.

Well, I've heard of a guy being buried in his Ferrari, but you would probably be the first in a Prius. :ROFLMAO: Either that or she will be selling your Prius soon.:p All kidding aside, I hope you are lucky and get your stickers before they run out. I think others have posted here about successfully getting their assigned plate numbers over the phone from DMV. Your dealer might have insight on the procedure.

Thanks. I didn't read every single post on this thread. Anyone knows which number to call DMV for the assigned license plate number?

I think you should be in time. You should have plates issued on the spot, and then you just need to submit the separate application for stickers. It goes to Sacramento, so I would mail it unless they tell you they can get it there faster, maybe electronically or fax, etc. Good luck.

If I were you, I'd definitely go today (as opposed to tomorrow) and be patient. The chance of getting a sticker at this point seems to be pretty low. Try and see if they will give you your new plates number at the DMV today and mail in the application overnight delivery.

Here's how it's looking right now:

The rate of sticker issuance is all over the place. The dealer program was halted on 3/17. From 3/12 to 3/21 the rate was 56 a day (counting weekends, but then DMV said mine were issued on Saturday, 3/22). From 3/21 to 3/28 it was 206 a day, way above the earlier average of 82 or so. So maybe there were fluctuations around the ending of the dealer program.

If those intervals are combined, then at that rate the last day for stickers will be 4/11. But that rate is just a guess. If it goes back to 82 a day, it'll be 4/19. If it goes back to the 40 a day before the dealer program started, it'll be 5/12.

In this thread I've seen the following number of days between mailing and the check clearing, in the past month: 15, 10, 8 and 14. Usually it takes 3 days or so from deposit to the cleared check appearing in your bank account.

So figure anywhere from 5 to 12 days from mailing to the sticker being issued. There might be 11 days of stickers left. There might be a month and a half. The last two ARB counts were posted the past two Fridays. So we should know more by this Friday.

I would say the chance to get the stickers is 50-50. Make sure to have the documents for the HOV stickers are printed out and ready to go for tomorrow. Triple-check all entries because an error would result in the application being returned to you. And don't forget the $8 check.

Just a thought -- can you get the vehicle registered at AAA today instead?

Yes you can send in app without the license plate number. I sent mines without the plate number and got the sticker, but it might be safer (since the stickers are almost gone) to call DMV now and get the plate # as someone else in the thread suggested before. Send your application as soon as possible. Good luck!!

I didn't realize the DMV is closed for Cesar Chavez Day in California. You could try going to a local AAA office, but I'm not sure they will be able to get your plates number if the DMV is closed. If HOV Stickers is worth it to you, I'd spend an hour or two and go there today and give it a shot. I'd say it's highly worth your time. The post office is opened since those are federal not state run.

When you first register a car from out of state, whether at the Auto Club or DMV, they take your old plates and issue new ones right there. Same thing if you buy a used car from a private party and the seller keeps the old plate (personalized, etc.) The overnight mail or express mail idea is a good one, maybe even registered, to show the date they receive it in Sacramento. Of course, you must be a member of AAA, but you can either join or transfer your previous club membership, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Well, you old policy is still in effect, right? Probably easier to just get over to your local AAA office than figure out how to get anyone there on the phone. They have a central call center fielding most calls, unless you have a local office direct number available.

old policy is a PA policy...they told me i would need to have a CA issued policy before i can register the car in CA. is that not the case?

Ahh, that may be right. Is the policy through AAA or someone else in PA? Actually, they may accept that, because I think the only requirement is that the car is covered. So as long as you haven't cancelled it, you may be OK. OTOH, if it is AAA, you should be able to get it in effect right away. They will want to see the car, etc.

i'm not a AAA member, so i'd have to join...but i was considering joining anyway, so if that will help me make sure (hopefully) that i get the sticker i'm ok with that. the old policy is allstate, new policy will be travelers...i set up the CA policy to be active at midnight tonight, and the PA policy will cancel effective tomorrow.

I don't think that will matter. They will use the info on your PA registration, which should include the lienholder/legal owner name and address. On a side note, if you keep your appointment at the DMV, and there is a line out the door, you should be able to bypass it and go inside. They don't always post signs to the effect that people with appointments don't have to wait in the line. May depend on where you are located; that's just what I have seen at a couple of offices. Are you handling the registration only, or getting your drivers license(s) also?

DMV has electronic service with the major insurers, but I don't know if Travelers is one of them. But if you have the paperwork showing it is effective as soon as the old one expires, that ought to do it. In any case, as long as you get the form sent in right away, I think you will get a sticker before they run out.
Auto Club should be happy to sign you up and help you with the registration. But you need to go to the DMV for drivers licenses. I think you have 10 days to do that.
