Actual EV Miles vs Estimated EV Range

Bisco, I'm also in the Boston area so same temps and my daily drives are local allowing me to drive pretty efficiently - but -
my EV range is 10% less than yours !
what are your efficiency numbers like ?

edit : still trailing est in a big way - 12.0 est drove 13.8 again today

what are efficiency numbers? i think my commute and local driving help me. my commute is 15 miles r/t, and i can plug in at work if needed. my local driving is fairly flat with few stops and 25-40 mph speeds. edit: oh, and i drive like an ol' lady.

 

I just had about two weeks of no freeway, all EV driving, short trips. After 125 miles, the ICE kicked in and then I did a few miles on the freeway. My EV estimate slowly dropped over the two weeks from 13.7down to 12.0 as of this morning. The ICE ran for a couple of miles at the end of an in town trip yesterday. Temps are in the high eighties. I'm wondering how low the estimated EV range will go if I don't make any longer trips on the freeway. In the past, more freeway driving has caused my EV estimated range to climb. Has anyone else experienced this? I understand that the estimate is based on recent driving habits, but driving strictly on EV doesn't seem to add to the EV range estimate. I did get 13.1 miles yesterday with the estimate at 12.1, before the ICE kicked in.

 

i think it's a personal experience, but the type of highway and hv driving you do, must maximize the efficiency of the battery. but the downside of this might be a less realistic estimate for pure ev driving. although your pre ev driving estimate of 13.7 is closer to the 13.1 you got yesterday, than it is to the 12.o you had after all the ev driving.

 

I am all the way up to 9.5 est. at start of today. Today I put on 11.0 miles with 1.5 left.

 

Second trip of the day 60 degrees, started with 10.3 est went 11.5 before ICE started, most of it high way driving 50mph!

 

Bisco, thanks for the input. I'm still trying to recover from the total reset caused by the removal of the traction battery following my accident last summer. Prior to that I was seeing EV range estimates of 15.5+ and getting actual numbers around that and occasionally higher. But I was also doing a lot of freeway driving then, with one way trips of 90 miles. So your idea of making more efficient use of the battery makes sense. I think this is what John1701 calls "boost" if I remember correctly. So when I'm puttering around town on EV, I'm actually using up the charge faster, even though my readout shows "999" for 125 miles.

 

I estimated that it is about 20 or 25 full charges and trips. I base this on the fact that a couple of months ago, with fairly constant weather for a couple of weeks I drove the same daily routes, all in EV except one trip. This trip went up a hill (HV), the back down (EV) at the end of the day I'd gone about 30 miles on one charge. The next day my range increased by about 1 mile. It took about 20-25 charges/trips of my normal daily driving for the EV estimate to drop back to its normal value.

Not real accurate...but a good guestimate, I think.

Bisco - I was thinking efficiency numbers are like what John posted : kWh / EV miles
He's adjusted for something like a 17% loss :

Dividing kWh of electricity consumed (including charge loss) by EV miles gives good measure, especially when real-world data is used.

I used 10% losses because I've measured my L2 charging losses as 9% and L1 as 12%. ~75-80% of my charges are L2 at work. I have no idea of how many charges I've done...most of them are partial charges starting with a mile of two remaining to full, or empty to just enough to get me to work (4 miles of charge gets me the 6 miles)
