Hubby hasn't driven his '06 Prius but once last week to work (56mi RT). Today, he drove 5 mi into town, headlights, fog lights, wipers and radio all on. All was fine. Car ran great. Came out of the store and turned the car on. The dash lit up like a Christmas tree including the hybrid warning on the MFD. But, car ran great. He quick checked all fluids, turned car on and off several times, no change. Drove back home and arrived with Triangle, Check Engine, VSC and Hybrid warning showing. Turned car off and on again, VSC dropped off, rest remained.

He had already taken 12V out and had tested at parts store. Store checked at 12.6 no load and 12.5 w/ load. So, codes are probably wiped.

    Reinstalled 12v and Checked -

    12.5 ACC
    12.1 IgOn
    14.1 Ready mode.

12v Optima Yellow Top was purchased in Sept. 2011.

All warning lights now off. MFD shows 6 blue bars for traction battery, no change since he came home. Coolant turbulence in reservoir for inverter.

Have ordered a mini vic scanner w/ Toyota Techstream have to wait for arrival.

Any ideas for other things I can check until I can pull codes?

Going to have to wait until the dash lights up again. When that happens pull the codes. Don't disconnect the battery until you pull the codes.

Mini vci is the tool to be had. Very similar to what Toyota uses.

Being in Texas where it is hot, don't be surprised if you get a P0A80 and P30XX codes when the dash lights up. Usually indicates a traction battery failure. Prius does not like real hot climates, taxes the battery kind of hard. Mountains and real steep hills also works it in overtime.

    Best of luck to you.

You are on the right track by ordering Mini VCI and verifying inverter coolant pump operation. In the meantime, have your husband fully-charge the 12V battery using a battery charger, overnight. See how long it takes for the charger to decide the battery is fully-charged.

Haven't done business with this company, but the owner does post here on Prius Chat. You might give them a call and go from there.

Prius Battery Repair of Houston - Home           Awesome service! Everyone I spoke with was very knowledgeable and helpful. The mobile service came right to my house, I didn't have to go anywhere. They gave me options before doing any work, so I was able to make an informed decision. The price was very reasonable, a lot less expensive than the dealer. I would definitely recommend this service.Susan Ford Prius Battery Repair of Houston really saved the day.  I was understandably upset when the P0A80 code registered on my 2004 Prius.  It was out of warranty with 135k miles and over 10 years old.  I was afraid I might have to buy a new battery which was almost as expensive as what I paid for my Prius 2 months ago.  I contacted many repair services and dealerships to inquire about what it was going take to get back on the road.  In the end I hired Prius Battery Repair of Houston to do the job and I was pleasantly surprised at what I got.  There were no surprises in the process at all.  Within a week of contacting PBRH, an agreement had been reached, a technician came to my home in Houston and my rebuilt hybrid battery was installed with a 1 year warranty.  The price was right too - not a dime over the advertised amount (I paid in cash).  I received a professional signed contract and have full confidence in this company to honor the warranty.  Now I'm back on the road and still loving my Prius.- Patrick

Two other possible options of companies in the Houston area that work on hybrid. Study the string below for more info.

Non-Dealership Mechanic Recommendations in Houston | PriusChat

Other alternatives are Dorman formerly Reinvolt, Toyota (top dollar) or DIY (reconditioning)

A few shops in the Austin area also, but don't have the info on it. Not to sure about Dallas, but the first link above says they will go to Dallas for a extra fee.

    Best of luck to you,
    Ron (dorunron)

I'm close to the Austin area. I'll do more checking. I found a place called Hybrid Battery Depot where they have remanufactured ones for $1750 shipped including return shipping for core and an 18 month warranty. That's the best I've found so far for reman.

Also, the car is at 148K....isn't this thing still under warranty from Toyota?

No, since you are in Texas all manufacturer's warranties expired at 100K miles.

Texas in not a carb state. Like Patrick said, 8 year/100K on the battery.

No telling what will happen. May be fine, may not. You can always disconnect and reconnect the battery to get it running again. If it is the battery, after a while it will totally give up and the battery trick wont work any more. Also it is hard on the battery when you do that. When the modules begin to fail, sometimes they can get hot. That in turn damages other modules. A local rebuilder posted some pictures recently here on PC. The modules that failed were definitely burnt.

Don't worry about it, because worrying only gives you gray hairs. Check the codes if the dash lights up and then fix the car. End of story.

    Best of luck to you,
    Ron

He just didn't want to get stuck halfway between work and home. Either way, it has to be driven to get it to throw codes again.

Now you are getting the idea of why I said to drive until the dash lights and then pull the codes BEFORE you disconnect the battery. The codes will tell the story.

With a option like that, you will have to pay someone to put it in, or DIY. Be aware of what you will have to do before you spend your hard earned money.

Well... it had already thrown codes, but lost them when the battery was pulled for check. Will drive again, close to home, until it throws them again. Not that it matters much at this point, don't have a code reader until the end of the week. Codes were lost before you ever responded, so not sure why you feel the need to rub my face in it.

OMG, please don't take it that way. I was not trying to rub anything in your face.

If I have offended you in any way, I do apologize.

DTC P0A80 is posted by the traction battery ECU and confirms that the traction battery needs to be replaced. DTC C1310 is posted by the skid control ECU and means that the hybrid system is impaired. That should go away after the traction battery is replaced.

Well, apparently you are facing a traction battery problem, which I suppose tempers my reply...

But Ron -- and Patrick -- are two of many, many, many helpful people on this board. Ron would never intentionally "dis" you. Indeed, I really have not found anyone on this board that is very objectionable.

So, Ron might dis me...but then I am well known as a whiner and complainer.... Give him some slack (and no, he does not need me to jump to his aid, but for me it is post here or go out and start cutting firewood, guess what wins?).
