DASH lit up with Red Triangle, Check Engine, VSC

Going to have to wait until the dash lights up again. When that happens pull the codes. Don't disconnect the battery until you pull the codes.

Mini vci is the tool to be had. Very similar to what Toyota uses.

Being in Texas where it is hot, don't be surprised if you get a P0A80 and P30XX codes when the dash lights up. Usually indicates a traction battery failure. Prius does not like real hot climates, taxes the battery kind of hard. Mountains and real steep hills also works it in overtime.

You are on the right track by ordering Mini VCI and verifying inverter coolant pump operation. In the meantime, have your husband fully-charge the 12V battery using a battery charger, overnight. See how long it takes for the charger to decide the battery is fully-charged.

No, since you are in Texas all manufacturer's warranties expired at 100K miles.

 

Texas in not a carb state. Like Patrick said, 8 year/100K on the battery.

 

No telling what will happen. May be fine, may not. You can always disconnect and reconnect the battery to get it running again. If it is the battery, after a while it will totally give up and the battery trick wont work any more. Also it is hard on the battery when you do that. When the modules begin to fail, sometimes they can get hot. That in turn damages other modules. A local rebuilder posted some pictures recently here on PC. The modules that failed were definitely burnt.

Don't worry about it, because worrying only gives you gray hairs. Check the codes if the dash lights up and then fix the car. End of story.

Now you are getting the idea of why I said to drive until the dash lights and then pull the codes BEFORE you disconnect the battery. The codes will tell the story.

With a option like that, you will have to pay someone to put it in, or DIY. Be aware of what you will have to do before you spend your hard earned money.

DTC P0A80 is posted by the traction battery ECU and confirms that the traction battery needs to be replaced. DTC C1310 is posted by the skid control ECU and means that the hybrid system is impaired. That should go away after the traction battery is replaced.

 

Well, apparently you are facing a traction battery problem, which I suppose tempers my reply...

But Ron -- and Patrick -- are two of many, many, many helpful people on this board. Ron would never intentionally "dis" you. Indeed, I really have not found anyone on this board that is very objectionable.

So, Ron might dis me...but then I am well known as a whiner and complainer.... Give him some slack (and no, he does not need me to jump to his aid, but for me it is post here or go out and start cutting firewood, guess what wins?).
