I would just leave it as is. It wouldn't be the same with vinyl RNDB positions on it. Besides, what's there to learn? D and R are your options, almost never use N or B

the good thing is, you can check the dash display before releasing the brake...

 

Just so you know, I taught my wife how to fold and open our double stroller at least a bazillion times until my kids grew out of them. If we didn't throw it out, and we still used it, she'd still ask me how to do those things.

She's not dumb... far from it. But when it comes to anything technical or mechanical, she's what I call 4D... in the 4th dimension. (I hope she doesn't read this.)

 

i think there's a special wives club. but then again, i've been pretending not to understand how the washer, dryer and stove work for 36 years.

 

As a matter of fact, she wants the Tom's/OGS/Stage 10 shifter. That way, according to her, she can just look down and press a letter.

I ask her maybe it would be better to get the hang of the stock shifter so she won't have to look down while she's trying to park or whatever. She calmly replied, "Nah."

To the OP, how does it feel when you shift. I'm used to just hooking my index and middle finger when I shift from D to B, back and forth, on the highway. I just want to know your experience with it... just in case.

 

i like the ogs, i'm always bumping the shifter when reaching for the buttons on the right.

 

I thought I wanted one at first. My wife was interested in it as well, as I previously mentioned. But the thing is that when I coast on the highway, I like to quickly shift to N and then shift back to B if I need to gradually slow down. I shift back and forth between D, B and N quite a bit. Not to mention I flick the cruise control a lot. The Prius definitely has changed the way I drive. My wife thinks the way I drive is "too busy" but for me it has become natural. I still get high 40s to mid 50s (sometimes way beyond) while driving fast. I don't only do this on highways, I do it even on busy streets.

You probably intended for that to be a joke but you're be right.

The only time I step on the accelerator is from a dead stop. I accelerate and cruise as soon as I'm near the speed limit. My foot only hovers above the brake and I rarely use the accelerator. I don't know how I came to drive like this but it's so natural for me now.

 

People laughed when I posted on how good this stainless steel threaded sleeve "screw on" German Zytel Nylon 6-6 ergonomic knob was on my Prius "v." The material is filled with fiberglass like the frame on the Glock pistols.

I tried it on a Gen III shifter that I was examining as a technical project.

Just "flick" it to the SW compass direction with your index finger for DRIVE and to the NW direction with the tip of the thumb for REVERSE.


It easier to find and use than the Stage 10, OGS or TOM's push button shifter. And, it fits the Gen II, Gen III and the "v."

 

I have a specially printed shift pattern label made with white on a clear background. I tried to upload a file, of the sticker, but the web site reported an error.

 

... If I had that, my mind would constantly be looking for 3 punch buttons and 3 kick buttons and constantly shifting in and out of sequences of gears, which probably wouldn't be good on the car..

 

A better and more ergonomic and intuitive design than the currently offered "push button" after-market shifters would be to put the buttons around the lower case "h" pattern of the OEM shifter. An "h" pattern separator which "steers" the fingertip to the proper button to allow a non eyes on "feel" like a blind man reading Braille would prevent the need to "hunt and peck" for the proper push button.

In the mean time, I's stick with my $6 shift knob and shift pattern sticker.
