And that's before you take into account the time off from life whilst you drop the car off for a service. Even if you just pop into one of the specialised oil change places they have in the US but not here, it's still time out of your life.

I'd rather have the car serviced every 10k and pay £50 for the quality oil than have it serviced every 5k and pay £15 for the cheap oil. It's time that's important to me too.

    It depends.......
On how long a period that covered
    AND
Whether the owner is going for 300,000 or not. :)

It does kind of put things into perspective though.......or it should.

It's neither cheap nor insurance. If you don't care about money spent on fuel/oils, why did you buy Prius in the first place?

Ask this owner how frequent were its oil changes...

Toyota Prius : 1 million de kilomètres en taxi !

    1million km = 625k miles

Since that is a Canadian Gen 2, one would hope they were every 8,000 km. If the OP had a Gen 2 I would be advising him to change every 5,000 miles. It is the current Prius flavors that advise 10,000 miles on synthetic oil.

Like I said, even though after this next change at 10,000 I plan to go to the recommended every 10,000 mile intervals, I'm not going to waste time debating with someone when they want, or should change their oil.

People spend money on their vehicles in lots of ways that can be deemed wasteful, just to feel better about ownership. If going by shorter than recommended intervals makes someone feel better about their potential engine durability? Then as an owner I think that is their right.

We might both trade our vehicles in with the exact same mileage and the person changing Oil every 5000 miles may never see a real benefit....BUT..if it made them feel better about their vehicle while they owned it? It's OK with me.

Decades back...the general recommendation for many vehicles was a ridiculous every 3000 miles. Sure on Dino Oil, but it was even then- probably hugely over kill. And when I was young? I did it. Because I felt better about my vehicle knowing I had...

Was it wrong? Probably a waste? Yeah...but I don't regret it. At that time, it's what I believed was right. Not doing it wasn't really an option for me.

You are stuck in 30 year old mud, and it wont let go. I've used 10,000 miles since 1976, with synthetic oil, with never a problem.

Did you file or replace your breaker points back in the day?

"Filed" at each service interval until there wasn't enough material to file anymore, then "replaced"...because, back THEN, "R&R" meant 'Remove & Rapair' not 'Remove & Replace,' as it does today.

Well, that's just the reason we need to go totally OT and start talking about filing breaker points, etc... :D

Guess you didn't see post # 36 yet where another guy says (about the Prius) "I couldn't feel like a man driving it, no matter how many NRA stickers I put on it."

Really, you have to read all 6 pages for a good laugh...

Maybe I'm not quite as old as I sometimes like to make myself sound. Even though...that defense is becoming less and less legitimate with every passing year.

No I never filed or replaced my breaker points.

To be totally honest, when I was growing up, my father was the type that dealt with automotive problems by paying other people to fix it. Not a big DIY person.

As an adult, I've lived mostly in apartments with no access to a garage. As much as I think I'd like to do more self automotive repair and even hobby modifications, I don't have a lot of experience. I mostly just marvel at what a lot of you guys DO get accomplished.

I was pretty proud of myself for just getting my Wheelskins steering wheel cover on in a passable manner.

I'm still kinda reeling, from the posted link to Canadian 2014 oil change schedule. Apparently for all Toyota vehicles. The km interval is:

    8000, 16000, 24000, then 16000 thereafter. (that's roughly 10000 miles)

I'll likely stay with 8000 km (5000 miles), I'm in the cheap insurance camp. Not sure though.
