    Hey Everyone,
So my 2012 Prius with Display Audio came with connection strings to allow the system to read emails, SMS messages and such for US carriers.

Is there a way to get the Display Audio system to do the same in Canada, or is it a function of my iPhone locking people out of things like reading SMS messages, etc...? For me it's greyed out despite the phone being connected for phone and audio. I also can't get it to connect for Internet.

Yeah yeah, I don't want to hear answers like, "Don't use an iPhone" - it's not helpful.

Also, is Entune locked to the VIN of the car? i.e. if a friend from the US were to connect to my car and they have Entune in their car, would Entune work? I've got one of the Display Audio receivers with HD Radio, etc... I'm assuming not but was curious.

I really hope Entune becomes available for Canada sometime soon...

I don't see why it wouldn't work. It takes a VIN# to create an Entune account. The VIN# is entered on a website ( myentune.com) and from there...you enter your credentials and create an account. Next, you log into the Entune app on your phone and wa-la.
Why don't you down load the Entune app on your phone and ask your friend for his Entune user and password. If you have apps like weather, bing and Pandora showing up on the apps button....give it a try.
I should have asked...you do have the "Apps," button and when you press it you see the apps: Weather, Sports, Stocks, Pandora..correct?

Your iPhone doesn't support the bluetooth profile required to push email/ text messages to the car. No big deal...and you aren't really missing anything that life changing.

I tried that - unfortunately it doesn't recognize the VIN from Canada, so it's locked down to cars sold in the US only it looks like.

That said, I'm probably not really missing that much. As long as I have my iPod Classic working, I should be good to go.

We have a 2012 Canada Prius, and SMS and Email does work, it's just very flakey and inconsistent.

On our android phone, SMS works about 80% of the time (although it never has sent a successful text, only reads) and email almost never works, but sometimes it magically un-greys and suddenly works. SMS works for the iPhone, but email has always been greyed out. Neither phone works for calendar. You don't need any special apps, just a phone that supports the right bluetooth profiles.

The internet stuff is only for American cars with entune. I downloaded the entune from the US iTunes app store, but its useless without registering your car - which as you figured out you can't do with a Canadian VIN. Even with the registered app, the car itself doesn't have the entune apps, and only has 4 (Maps, Email, Phone and Pictures) - I think we'd probably need a firmware update to enable the rest. I don't think we'll see a way to get any entune functionality here until Toyota finally decides to launch it. Yay Canada - pay more for the car and get less!

You should keep playing with your phone though, because the four apps that are there do work in Canada. (Pictures uses a USB thumb drive plugged in, not your phone's pictures though)

Don't use an iPhone :p. On a serious note, I really think it is tied to the phone as vanbran mentions above, Android phones have some capability and it's the iPhone that doesn't support that feature.

Also, it's just a software lock anyway. Maybe someone will figure out how to unlock it.

The only thing I can see worth using in Entune is Bing Search. It really expands the functionality of the built-in navigation system as you can search for anything like you would on the internet at home and send it to the navigation system and have it navigate there. This way, if a POI changes or it's not listed because your maps are out-of-date, you can still use Bing to search for it.

It's also more user friendly. For example, you can just type or say "Flowers" and it'll list the flower shops by relevance and I think by distance too.

OpenTable might be of some use too.

"Currently Toyota has no plans to introduce Entune in Canada" -not a very productive move to have the system installed but no way to use it outside the lower 48. When you press the Apps button, all you get is Maps. I hope some third-party developer steps in to provide a solution.

The service manager at my Toyota dealer says his text-messaging started working when he drove to the US, and it's been working ever since. It sounds like nothing more than a lucky glitch.
