A friend of mine is considering trading in her gas-guzzling luxury car and getting a Prius. I looked at Kelley Blue Book, and there seemed to be a $6000 spread between the price of a new 2014 and a used 2013. I was surprised by this. Can anyone explain it? Do dealers still have unsold 2013 Prius's ?

what surprises you? car's lose the most value the second you purchase them and next most after the first year.

    This.

However, the KBB value isn't necessarily what they'll sell at. Prii will generally sell for higher than their book value. Check Cars.com, AutoTrader, or Craigslist to see what the actual prices are like in your area. As far as new 2013 models still on the lot, your best bet would be calling a few local dealers.

Look around, I just bought a brand new 2013 Model #3 and picked it up on 3/31/14. Got a GREAT deal too!

I just recently purchased a 2014 after originally considering used ones. I found that for what I want in mileage on a used car and features (Bluetooth as not all used ones had it) I was going to be paying a couple thousand less than a brand new one with fewer miles. I was looking for used mileage less than 40,000 but preferably around 30,000 and my new one had 260 when I got it, due to it being a dealer trade.

Of course I know that cars depreciate once sold. I had the impression, though, that this was not very marked with Priuses. Thanks also for the autotrader, etc. suggestions.

unfortunately, prius is subject to market conditions too. just different ones. if you want to do well buying, selling and trading, you have to watch gas prices.

In my area, it seems all Prius under 100k are over 10,000. I found my 13' (2) with 8k on it for 19, where the new ones were 25.
