My prius A/C is not working. I am thinking it may need a gas refill. Any idea how much it costs? Can we do it ourselves (to save labour cost)?

You may have a leak in your system, without fixing that first, even refilling with new freon won't last very long.

Thanks. How much would fixing a leak and refill cost? (ballpark figure is ok).

Let's start with where you live? How long have you noticed the car not being cold? Was this sudden or gradual? Did you do any maintenance items or any accidents around the time the AC stopped working?

I am in new hampshire. I just bought a used car couple of weeks ago. Did not notice the A/C problem until yesterday when the temperature went too high. Trying to contact original owner to get more info, but he is not responding. Yes I know stupid me, should have checked before buying :(

What's the VIN# on the car, maybe if you look up the history at toyota.com "owners portal", it can shed some light on the problem. (assuming it was dealer serviced)

    Is the car salvaged?

No it has clean title, no accidents. I looked at carfax. Nothing specific to A/C or any other major problems.

Some others will ring in shortly with a checklist you can do to narrow down your problem. It could be something very simple to something very complicated and expensive. We have many knowledgeable members here that knows the ins and outs of the AC system.

Here's a list of symptoms and problem areas that can cause them.

oh... didn't know it was this complicated. I had pictured A/C system as a simple nozzle where hot air goes in and cold air comes out, something similar to the high school text book experiment, may be a little more complex -- looks like it is not :(

If you were the original owner, you probably would have a better idea why this system failed. But since you just bought the car and the original owner is not answering your calls, most likely the issue is a bit more complicated. That table I gave you has symptoms you can associate with your problem, from that point on, you would narrow down the problems one at a time.

There's an easier way to do this, maybe just wait for other replies. They should have more knowledge than me on this subject.

The owner responded - told that he had a gas refill done last year when he noticed a/c wasn't working well and hasn't used the car much since then. If the refill is done last year and it is not working already, I guess it may be a leak?

How many miles on the car? What maintenance records do you have, other than oil changes?

close to 100k miles. Most of the service records are just "Vehicle serviced", "Oil filter changed" from dealer, but here are things that caught my attension:

    11/24/2010 Engine oil cooler line(s) repaired/replaced
    08/26/2013 Failed emissions inspection
    10/16/2013 Passed emissions inspection

sounds like something hit the car or the car ran over something. this could damage engine oil cooler line as well as the ac system/radiator.

If you get a chance, look at the coolant level in your car (might have been repaired). I'm suspecting it's low and you may have air in your system. Just open the radiator cap (covered by an engine area cover right in front of the car) and see if it needs fluid. Also the reservoir next to it might be empty as well, if it's empty, chances are the radiator fluid would be low.

If it's low, you should just do a coolant service. It's a 100k miles service, you should change out the coolant. No need to fill something you'll be draining if you do the service. This could fix your heater issue (not sure about the AC, my hobby knowledge only brings me this far)

Just so you know, the AC fill costs me $153 at my local Toyota Dealer. Do not take it to anywhere else but the dealer for this. The Prius AC uses a specific type of oil known as ND11. If one uses other than that, it can ruin the entire system. This is not an area you want to mess up.

What the dealer will do is put refrigerant in the system and a dye that will show if there's a leak.

The coolant level is very low - hope that is a good sign. So do I just buy coolant from auto store and fill it in?
