Only gas power at 70-75 MPH and got 57 MPG??? Prii normally can't do this, correct?
Was a Polar Vortex pushing you from behind with 30-40 MPH winds?
Baltimore to Ohio is uphill so that does not explain this incredible mileage.

    edit, saw new post:
'Recovering energy' does not work when you are rolling down the highway at a steady 70-75 MPH. Does a PiP have a much higher highway MPG rating than a standard Prius?

I agree the Prius plug-in is a fantastic vehicle, like I said we make this trip regularly and the standard Prius does it at 52 MPG average the Plug-in gets 57 MPG averaging both ways 58 mpg with a tail wind and 56 MPG with a headwind.

59 MPG was the result from running around yesterday on Mother's day. All I had for EV available was 30% capacity. Total distance traveled = 124 miles.

The drive home this morning was 28 miles, without any plug-supplied electricity. Same result = 59 MPG.

Prius is very efficient, much to some people's dismay... and my pleasure.

    That is fantastic!
EPA numbers are not that good. You are really beating those numbers by a lot!
    Congratulations !!

And like I said, fuelly numbers for cars like this make no sense. Look at Pip and Volt numbers. What good are they?

People who have not experienced the Prius plug-in just don't get it! It is a truly fantastic combination of EV and HV at phenomenal gas/ICE efficiencies which result from the larger battery pack.

Baltimore to Ohio is hilly indeed, I recover a lot of energy when I cross the continental divide. More in the plug-in then the 2010 Prius IV. I am very patient and have frequently achieved 52 MPG in my 2010 Prius. Even at 75 to 80 MPH when I travel in South Carolina, we do 700 miles in one day going to Savannah GA and I got 49 to 50 MPG in my 2010 Prius IV.
Now I believe I have mastered pulse and glide but this is my 3rd Prius so?

That really is fantastic that you are beating the EPA highway rating by 10 MPG!
Especially when you are driving 70-80 MPH!!
Maybe you should share your incredible driving style so others can achieve the same incredible results!

There is one thing that is not questionable about your post: The continental divide is in the Rockies.

I prefer the divide here, where there isn't anywhere near as much of an elevation change... just water following in the opposite direction... which really plays with your mind, especially when watching a sunset.

Here's a shot of the end-o-trip screen for my commute home tonight. The car blended the 10 miles of EV with the ICE and gave me this. A charge costs me around $0.50 at home and $0.00 at work. Gas was $3.33/gallon. Speeds varied from 20mph to 75mph. The time was actually less, since I had to get my camera, pop a lens on it and get it ready.

I am not beating the EPA numbers by 10MPG in my plug-in at 70 to 80MPH. I said in my 2010 Prius IV I would get 49 to 50 MPG, you must have missed that. Plus I don't see anywhere that I said I was getting 10 MPG over the EPA highway rating.

Quote: Even at 75 to 80 MPH when I travel in South Carolina, we do 700 miles in one day going to Savannah GA and I got 49 to 50 MPG in my 2010 Prius IV.
I haven't driven my Prius plug-in to Savannah GA yet, but soon I hope to make that trip.

I think John1701a is the one who recounted getting 59 MPG on mothers day weekend.

You are correct about the continental divide, I am thinking of a watershed change along I-68 in Maryland that is the high point between the east coast (Baltimore MD area) and my home in Ohio.

    OK, I stand corrected.
Never heard of so many continental divides before this.

    I'm old school.
There can only be one Continental Divide.
You stand on that summit line in the Rockies.
    You take a leak.
Point west it goes to the Pacific.
Point east it goes to the Atlantic.

Greg, I like your signature. One of my favorite movies! When I first got my Volt I told people I felt like I was driving around in the movie Blade Runner! Next time you see that Prius mark the time in the movie!

    Mind,
You said: When on the interstate I drive at an average speed of 70 to 75 MPH and in HV mode get typically 56 to 58 MPG.

EPA for a PiP is 48 MPG highway.

Sorry, I don't know how to do the quote thing....

49 MPG is the official rating for highway.

That's 1 MPG higher for the plug-in than the regular model.

The last time I saw a figure that low was when I used the PiP for a generator when Sandy hit. :D

I can't resist; I shouldn't do this, but since you want to have a pissing match, if you stand on your continental divide and take a leak pointing east, it is going to flow into the Mississippi and then to the Gulf of Mexico. The same if I stand on the Eastern Continental Divide and take a leak pointing west

    ElDo,

Yes, those numbers can be impressive to the uninitiated.
My display shows MPG for weeks at a time, (actually it maxes at '+250 MPG' ).
    What good are these numbers?

They are like the illusion of differing currents of water seen during a sunset by the sea.
So many illusions in this life, there are.

There can ONLY be one. Pacific or Atlantic.

Something we can do up here, is take a leak in four oceans. We have divides that lead to the Pacific, the Arctic, Hudson's Bay, or the Gulf of Mexico, via the Milk River, which spills into the Missouri.
