The left front bearing is worn and is under factory warranty. The dealer is nice to put a warranty through to cover the right side as well. They said Toyota warranty covers the bearing replacement but not the alignment. It may sound absurd but since they are doing more than I'd ask for, I am not going to count pennies with them. They already saved me a lot with the replacement on both sides (about $1000). I think we should be more appreciative of others are doing for you.

this alignment fee is not going into the pocket of the service writer, if it can be covered, it would be covered by Toyota as a warranty repair.

Anyways, I see your point. It's up to you to ask or not ask.

I am pleased to say that after both front bearings are replaced, the noise is gone and the car drives like new. Both bearing replacement are covered under Toyota warranty. I had to pay about $100 for alignment.

May be the dealer wanted to make a few more bucks out of a zero dollar warranty repair. The invoice indicates "Perform 4 wheel alignment" for $99. Since I've never performed any alignment services for over 4 years, it may be a good "preventive maintenance measure".

yeah, they should have asked you first, but it was probably worthwhile.

They did tell me ahead of the $99 charge and I agreed to it. It is well worth the extra amount for their service provided. Besides, the dealership need to make a little profit and the staff need to make money to support their families. I am okay with that.

Toyota compensates the dealership for warranty work I'm sure. Maybe not "retail" rates, but...
