Is there any way I could repair the old one? What actually caused this failure?

Hurry up and check the manufacturing date of your car. You may still be in warranty...hopefully it was a late built 2005. I got mines in within a week of expiration. It took 2 weeks. Good luck.

I doubt it unless you are an electronics expert who can inspect and solder surface mount components. The failure probably has to do with a bad solder joint and may require a microscope to determine.

Try holding the POWER button down for a few seconds.

The reason the car will not easily turn off is that the combination meter is screwed up and is not reporting vehicle speed, and the power control ECU does not want to power down if the car is still in motion.

Since your car is less than nine years old you may be able to get the repair done under extended warranty. It would be better if you have the letter announcing this warranty; but even if not, you can ask about that. See the second link I provided in my earlier post above.

Look at number 2 on page 1. Print the whole PDF and bring it along with you to dealer in case they play dumb. You should be good til August...

"well the MFD is still on but of well."
If this is still true, then you need to take some action. If pressing the POWER button does not allow you to fully turn off the car, then you'll need to disconnect the 12V battery negative cable where it bolts to the body.

Or, the 12V battery will become dead and you'll be looking for a tow truck Tuesday morning.

Remember, the stealer doesn't necessarily have to replicate the problem, if somehow the combination meter comes back to life while you drop it off. It says somewhere in that warranty form that they must repair it if the customer reports such symptoms.

It would be better if you had some photographic evidence of the failure, but regardless you should pursue the issue with your local dealership.

Assuming they accept your claim of a failed combination meter, they will probably want you to leave the car for a few days while they order a replacement combination meter with your current odometer reading programmed in.

Likely you have a bad combination meter. It doesn't tend to be a symptom of a weak 12V. Follow through and get it tended to before it becomes something you have to pay for!!

If, like Patrick says, your dealer wants live or photographic evidence, I'd guess you won't have any trouble making that happen before August. It seems when the CM is blacking out in warm weather, it's in an advanced stage of failure. This (CM failure) is a problem that typically manifests itself in cold weather to begin with.

Either way, I think you'll be able to get it warrantied with minimal, or no hassle.

Thank you! Now I almost want it to go blank again lol. But I'm sure if it really is a failing CM it will do it again between now and August. At least I hope! I will keep this post updated. You guys rock!

You don't want it to go blank; it can be very dangerous. Just take it in. Toyota will pay for the rental car, too. Combination meter is an expensive repair. It was a $1400 bill when I got it done a few months ago. Remember, you don't need any evidence. My dash was fully operational when I brought it in.

*Update* at my local toyota dealer right now, have someone looking at it right now, so they can order the new combination meter! It might take two weeks to get the part though
