Can anyone tell me if they have had this issue before and how it was fixed or what the problem was to cause your check engine light to go off? I will take my car to auto zone tomorrow morning to hopefully get a code and see if I can fix it myself... if not, then I am going to have to go to the dealership. Trying to avoid it though.

Just trying the most inexpensive way to fix this since I currently don't have the finances.... Currently Unemployed but waiting to start a new job in July... so any help would greatly be appreciated!!!! Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!

take it to autozone and get the code read, report back with the codes. If you got this light after getting gas, it might be a loose gas cap.

It happened to come on after I bought my groceries at Whole Foods, I had driven all day long and made stops along the way, went home and drove to Whole Foods not until I got in the car after my purchase did the light come on. I will get it checked first thing tomorrow and get the codes. Thank you!

Have you checked the obvious things like oil and coolant levels yet?

checked the oil dip stick and it was between the two dots. The coolant level I topped off just a very small amount...

Well, my check engine light wasn't on this morning when I started up my car, but I took it to auto zone anyways. I asked the person to check and they said that if the light went off that it may not read. She plugged it in to and we got a code p1121 which is the water coolant valve. It seems some other people have had this issue. I took it to the dealership to get an estimate and they have estimated $528 to fix the issue. I am going to call around to other dealerships to see if I can get a better price to have it fixed. I will do some research but I don't know if this is something that I can fix myself. Any suggestions as to fixing it myself or if anyone has trusted a auto shop other than a toyota deanship to fix this issue would be of great help.
I am always a little hesitant on going to get my car serviced else where since the last time I went to get a basic oil change at Firestone, it ended up causing me about $600 worth of problems and a huge amount of stress. Luckily the service advisor from the toyota dealership helped me get my money refunded from firestone, because she explained, the tech had put way to much oil in my car, causing my car to light up like a christmas tree and shut down completely and be towed to the nearest dealership.

Since you are an owner who is willing to pay someone else (especially Firestone) to replace the engine oil/oil filter, I would say that replacing the engine coolant valve would be beyond your capability/interest.

Find the best local dealership who can do that job and be done with the problem. A reasonable amount of skill is required when working on the engine coolant system and you don't want a tech who was just promoted from doing oil changes. Good luck.

P1121 is one of those codes (particularly in the summer) you can ignore until your financial situation improves. Ignore this comment if you are due for an inspection and your state requires the check engine light to be off in order to pass.
Edit: I just saw you are in texas. Texas is one of those states that requires the light to be off regardless of the reason..

If i ignore the code, will I risk any damage to the car? Like I had said the Check engine light went off the next morning when I started the car up, but only got the code when I asked the girl to perform a diagnostic, which she was hesitant because the light was off. I am still considering getting this issue fixed so I don't have the red triangle of doom show up later on. Thanks!

If that is the only DTC then you don't have to worry about causing more damage. The issues are 1) the cabin heater may not work well and 2) the engine will emit slightly higher exhaust emissions during warmup than normal.

Patrick said it best. This is one of those codes you can ignore. When mine started to go it would come on one day and off the next.. Some days the valve sticks some it doesn't. The one downside is you may not know if something else throws a code. Buying a cheap code reader would solve that.

Looks like its move than just a coolant valve and another issue as well. Total cost to fix both issues $865 but I also have a coupon for 15 % off but only up to $175 off, lets hope they don't note that small fine print..... They worked out a deal for me.. I will post everything that was wrong with my car... when I get the paper work back.

IF you are in Texas in the Dallas area I recommend servicing your vehicle at
    Sports City Toyota
12650 Lyndon B Johnson Fwy, Dallas, TX 75228
    (877) 934-4725

Please ask for Mickey or Greg
they were the service men that took care of me and worked at an amazing deal for me!

OMG $865 for 2 services? You don't have to worry about the fine print, 15% off $865 is only $129.75

This is crazy! First stop shopping "Whole Paycheck" second, the check engine light in a Prius goes off for everything! It is a smart car but that lamp is stupid! I've had a :) sticker over mine for the last 150,000 miles I'm at 377,462 now. Third find an authorized independent Prius certified mechanic. Fourth Prius's aren't smog inspected in Texas or Anywhere. Fifth a $79. Code reader will report to your cell phone any code in English (American, Texas speak). Lastly order all three mechanics manuals with the savings from your new mechanic and tell him what you appreciate in a mechanic most is honesty when you pick them up.
You will still be $$$$ ahead!

Wrong on your fourth. Prii are most certainly hooked up to OBD during a safety inspection in the counties that do smog checks. In addition a visual inspection of the check engine light is performed.

"The On-Board Diagnostics (OBDII) emissions test for 1996 & newer vehicles consists of the following:

Check 1 - Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon Light, Check Engine Light, Check Engine Symbol check
This is considered the bulb check portion of the test. The light must come on when the ignition is turned to the ON position and the light must go OFF when the engine is started. The inspector answers these two bulb check questions as either a PASS or FAIL. If the light is not working, the vehicle will FAIL the test, because the purpose of the light is to alert the driver of the vehicle that there is a problem with the OBDII system (exceeding emissions) and the vehicle needs to be diagnosed and repaired."

I cannot wait to tell Larry McCain I found another reason to Love California EXEMPT. Any car with over 377,000miles and still getting over 43 mpg average on a tank of gas should notify the owner that he has saved over $30,000.00 I consider that check engine light to mean " How the $&@"$ is that possible" which is why Toyota is moving to Texas, to mess with y'all and show you how it's done.

i had the same thing recently.. drove it like that for awhile. bought a control valve online( ebay maybe)... i replaced the valve myself. wasnt extremely hard. removed a few plastic guards, reached down and removed three hoses. that was the most difficult to do ! installed the new valve body, installed the hoses.. no more check engine light.. i did drain about 1.2 gallons of coolant, to do this. not sure if you need to. replaced coolant... not very difficult

So glad you were able to DYI
Im just in a different boat and either way I got the issue fixed and appreciate the info on here and help..... I am so glad this forum offers DIY videos and help for other people that can do it.

So this is exactly what they did:

Changed out heater coolant flow valve and replaces water pump assembly because there was a leak they also found which he told me connects to the engine...

they also fixed a few other things for me and didn't charge me for it.... little things.... It's probably the least they could do, but they didn't have to and I am thankful for it.

the total was $743.70 with my 15 % off coupon....

also, He did mention getting my check engine lights to come off because he said it will not pass inspection if it's on.

So basically you were low on coolant from the leaking water pump, which triggered the coolant valve dtc when not functioning properly due to low coolant.

Anyways, glad you got it fixed.
