I was on my way home from a business trip and a deer decided it a good idea to run into the highway, LUCKILY all he did was knock of the passenger side rearview mirror and put a solid dent/scartch in the door panels. I was hoping some of you may have advice on the cheapest means to replace this. I am no car expert by any means but am also a poor 25 year old, I have looked online at various sites and it seems that prices range from 30-50, from a manufacturer called Kool Vue (i do not have heated mirros, theirs say heated will that create problems). I am not familiar with replacements parts at all and want this done in the cheapest way, will this work with the 2005 model without any problems? Do they hold up well? Also, what would be best to make the color match (i own gold). Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated, I am hoping I can do this myself with some basic tools.

Do you have a picture of your damaged mirror? You would be better off buying a used mirror, it'll fit properly and look exactly like the driver's side. If you buy something that's not OEM, it may look strange having one side look different from the other.

I believe all the mirrors are heated from Gen 2

I personally wouldn't worry about the color match. The Kool Vue mirrors will fit and you shouldn't have any problems with them.

It's not about the color match. The quality of the non OEM mirrors always seem to be not as good. The plastic housing is not as strong and when you drive, you'll notice the images you see from the mirror is always distorted because the mirror vibrates more than it should.

I don't have personal experience with Kool Vue but the non OEM mirror I tried once before was a big mistake. I would take a used OEM for the same price vs. a New non OEM mirror.

    just my 2 cents

Well, yeah, I agree with everything you say. I was giving him advice based on what he said. He wanted to get off cheap but also wanted to know how to get the color to match. Me personally, I would probably buy a used one from the junkyard and paint it myself. The Driftwood Pearl is a pretty easy color to match using a can.

Sorry if I sound ignorant but how do I go about finding one at a junkyard? I have never gone through that process before. Also, any recommendations on where I can buy the paint/process of painting it?

Thank you so much for all the advice thus far!

If it were me, I would start by giving Steve at Autobeyours.com a call. He is very likely to have what your looking for and maybe even an exact match. Beyond that, go on Ebay and see what's available there. Search for a 2005 Prius passenger mirror. Then you can narrow down your search from there by selecting OEM or Toyota and used. Many high volume junkyards post their parts on Ebay.

As for painting it, if your car is "gold", the exact color is called "driftwood pearl". The exact color match can be obtained here
    Manufacturers
. You can buy a 12 oz aerosol spray can for $20 but you will also need to buy the clear spray. Once you acquire the paint and the clearcoat, simply follow the directions that come with the can. Pretty simple really.

Personally, I would try really hard to find a mirror that's already painted the right color.

I really appreciate the help, you guys are awesome! I am going to start searching Ebay and the site you provided for the proper colored mirror. I will post a picture shortly of the damage and an update once I do some more digging. Thank you again!!!

I really recommend calling Steve at www.autobeyours.com first. He very likely has one in the color you need.

I spoke with Steve and unfortunately they do not have any mirrors in stock at his facility, thanks for the advice though. I also cant seem to find any with the driftwood pearl color available, I am going to continue looking but will purchase a black one this evening if necessary. Below are pictures of the mirror damage, i currently have it hanging inside the door because I am unsure if the wire can be cut. please take a look below, the inner rubber lining (that I have my finger on) is no longer attached but I figured that can be glued if necessary. Do you see anything that makes it look like the installation cannot be done with whatever mirror I purchase online?

The driftwood pearl cover can be purchased from your Toyota dealer.......already painted and ready to install.

It can be glued but glue won't likely last long in weather. It is best to fix it the "right" way. I don't really know how it comes apart without seeing it in person but, what I would do is take it completely apart and determine what exactly broke. If gluing is necessary, I would use high strength waterproof epoxy then clamp for 2-3 hours. Everything can be fixed and a new mirror can be mounted, its just a matter of determining what parts you need. You may just need a mirror or you may need some other parts as well. If you go to an online parts dealer, they will likely have a diagram of it.

And btw, don't cut the cable until you get the new mirror. You shouldn't have to cut the cable anyway. You should be able to unplug it.

Here's what the diagram looks like (not too detailed)

That mirror is broken beyond repair......the vibrations from driving would make any repair temporary before falling apart.

JC, why do you say broken beyond repair? I am about to buy a replacement mirror online and install, is that not going to be possible?

You can buy a replacement, that would be the correct way to fix it once and for all....I was referring to gluing the thing back. Looking at where it broke off, any attempt to glue would be temporary.......and you would have to address it again later.

Yes the replacement mirrors comes with everything. I had to replace my driver's side once. Very easy job, I think 2 or 3 bolts that hold it in place and plug all the wires into a harness. You do have to remove the door panel to get access to the harness.

phew! I thought I was done, awesome. I really appreciate both your advice and input on everything, since I have had difficulty finding the specific color, I was going to go through one of the options below but I do like USNAVY's idea of purchasing one already painted online. Do you have any recommendations on where I can purchase prepainted where it wont be too expensive?

Finding one in your color is likely a waiting game. You have several options, 1) buy the cheapest black one, install it and wait for a gold one to become available on ebay. 2) buy an off color oem on ebay and buy the gold cover from the dealer/online for $32 3) buy an aftermarket black one and be done etc etc. you just have to decide

Sorry for the neediness, just want to get this done and ensure its done properly prior to ordering everything. I figure that I can order one of the above parts and get the painted cover from one of the sites recommended earlier (seen below). Now other questions being:

    1) the OEM site below refers to a bronze color, no driftwood pearl, is that the same?
    2) will an OEM cover work on an after market?

    For example, the following combination:
COVER, OUTER MIRROR, LH. BRONZE M.M.,4S2. MIRROR (PRIUS (NHW20)). 2005 TOYOTA Prius # 8794568010E0

    and

    Thanks again!
