I just looked into Lyft and love it - I'd do the same except it looks like they aren't in the suburbs west of Boston yet.
Not sure I'd make enough for it to be worthwhile if I had to drive say 20miles to get in the Boston coverage area

Keep watching, maybe they'll expand it. And check into Uber. It's more or less the same thing.

Uber is being challenged in London too: Will Uber kill the black cab? | UK news | The Guardian
It's also competing there with Hailo, an app to get you a proper black cab, as well as Addison Lee, a citywide private hire firm.
Personally in Central London I'd always use a proper black cab. In thirty years I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've given them a street or hotel name sufficiently obscure for them not to know where it is, and I've only once had one where I was pretty sure I got ripped off on the route - should have challenged him, but it was the start of a weekend in London with my wife and I didn't want to spoil it by making a scene.

    this is awesome!
when we visited SF, we used Lyft and the drivers were way cool and down to earth!

+1 for the background checks and social media integration. lets you know who you're riding with and their reviews/scores.

not to mention the fist bump before taking off! ha

I have read that the examination to become a black cab driver is brutal. Given the name of some obscure alley, the examinee has get there without the aid of maps.

Ya, sounds like a wise use of their resources considering the murders, drugs, and thefts. Good work, Miami! Floridians showing their intelligence again.

Next time I'm in a black cab I'll ask them where they would take someone who said that... I suspect it would either be Charing Cross, which is where it was meant to be, or to one of the two locations they have used in the films.

Yes, learning The Knowledge, as it's known, takes a couple of years. If you come to London and see someone on a moped with a clipboard perched in front of them, that's what they are doing - learning the set routes that they have to know in order to pass the test. I just looked it up; they need to know 320 routes, 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks or places of interest within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross. They get tested orally - the examiner gives them a starting point and an end point and they have to describe the trip: "left onto the Strand, second exit from Trafalgar Sq roundabout onto Whitehall" etc.

Crazy, seems like overkill in this day and age with GPS.

It's much safer and faster to get to destination when you know your city than just relying on the GPS.

Have any of you who are driving for these services consulted a tax professional with regard to the deductibility of expenses related to using your personal vehicle? I do driving for people in their own vehicles, but am allowed to deduct my mileage to get to the job location as an independent contractor. I have to maintain a written record of odometer readings related to business use of my personal vehicle. However there is a question on the tax form regarding using my car for business as a taxi or limo, which if answered affirmatively I believe cancels the simple mileage deduction calculation. OTOH, maybe Uber and Lyft pay you for your mileage and there are no tax consequences.

The black cabs are part of what the City of London is about. Not to be confused with metropolitan London, the City of London has its own government with privileges not normally associated with British municipalities. Getting rid of the black cabs would be like telling San Francisco that cable cars are obsolete and should be retired.

(I am not Brit; I am just interested in that sort of thing.)

Yes, mileage is deductable. Uber does not pay for mileage, I doubt Lyft does.
I keep a log when I am on duty and will use that at the end of the year. I believe it is $0.554 cents/mile this year. Check with an accountant to be sure.

Your post just made me sign up for Lyft as a driver.
It's seems like a beautifull concept.
How long have you been "lyfting" ?
