OK, updating my test with my 2006 127k mile engine burning oil. After 2 OCI with MMO added to the oil, it has not improved the oil burning. I was using 3 quarts 5w30 oil and added 1/2 quart of MMO. Oil burning seems to be about 1 quart 1500 miles or so. I believe before this MMO test, the car was burning around 1 quart every 2000 miles or so.

This may be because the oil has been thinned out by MMO but not really sure. Next OCI, I will be using Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 5w30, because I heard that oil has exceptional cleaning power.

You are going about this all wrong......probably.

MMO will only help if there is a stuck ring.
It is likely that is NOT your problem........or anything else that "cleaning" will help solve.

The problem likely IS wear on the piston rings or the valve guide seals.
If that is the case, a thicker oil with "seal additives" is your only hope.
That is sold as "high mileage" oil.

If that doesn't help......AND THERE ARE NO ACTUAL LEAKS.......living with it or trading are about your only two choices.

If that much oil really IS making it's way out the tailpipe, it won't be long before the catalytic converter fails.......probably.

I've already determined to get a new engine for this car, one day. For now it's just adding oil and keeping it running. It's more of an experimental car right now, I'm just hoping not to get stranded far away from home when it decides to break down.

I'm going to try the Pennzoil platinum on the next OCI, I'll eventually make it down to the high milage 10w-40 oil experimentation. Just takes time to get there...........

    But the question IS.....

Why are you wasting your time with doing things that are guaranteed to NOT work ??

If you screw around long enough that the CAT burns up or plugs up, your "experiments" will come to an abrupt halt.

And have you given it a REALLY good physical inspection for actual leaks ??
Spots where it is usually parked ??

There are no leaks that I can see. The plugs are new, although the old plugs with only 25k miles on them were all ashed up. The engine also makes a really nasty sewing machine valve noise, it really needs an adjustment. But everything I've read about adjusting these valves, makes me not want to do it. Just replace the darn engine when the time comes.

The car has only 127k miles on it, Although it's high mileage, I don't see it that high where the engine should be in that poor of shape. That's the reason for my experiment.

I thank god the 3rd gen has hydraulic valve cam adjustment. I don't mind doing screw adjusters, though I have to say with the last vehicle I did it on, it was *getting at* the valves that was the royal hassle.

But shim adjustment is something I've never done, nor relish. Any idea what the dealership would charge?

I've brought this to my mechanic that works on my cars (he did the transaxle swap on my 2005), he said he didn't want to do the adjustment. Never did it and never want to.

Whether it SHOULD be or not, it IS.
You are not being realistic in your expectations OR in your trial solutions.

    I'm done.

I don't think PP oil will do much cleaning. 15W40 HDEO or any of the high mileage oils would be a better bet. Piston soak and/or oil flush is the best bet.
Despite what Easy Rider clams, some additives actually work. MMO is probably the weakest (but least expensive). Kreen is the most effective, but expensive and not available in CA (toxic).

Another thing you may want to look into is EGR cleaning. Not sure about gen 2, but it's a problem in gen 3 and one person said it helped with oil consumption: Prius III engine knocking at high torque low RPM (solved) | PriusChat

The MMO was really diluting the oil and getting to where it was no longer a 5w30 weight. I'm going to run a straight 5w30 PP and see if it will improve some. After 2 OCIs with the MMO, it didn't do anything to improve the burning. I've read it was a slow cleaner, takes time but now 10k miles later, I'm ready to try something else. Piston soaking would be my last resort. Gonna try not to smoke out my neighbors first......

Shrug. Little smoke if you take care to evacuate fluid from cylinders before starting.

Back in the day- ( summer 1980 best I can recall) I had a temp use Chevy Vega while my Jeep was getting bodywork/paint done.
That car smoked and burned a quart a week... I ended up putting straight 50 weight racing oil in it, Castrol IIRC. Oil use went down considerably after that.

I actually quite enjoy experimenting with this car. It's such a beater, it has become my favorite to drive. Although not great to look at or to listen to, it's just so easy to park it in a really bad neighborhood and never have to look back to see if it'll get scratched/dinged/stolen. Since I've gotten this car, I've learned a lot about the Prius from it. I've had to repair many things on the car and it gave me lots of knowledge that I didn't have before. It never has broken down and it's been a great point A to point B car.

I know exactly how you feel- at one point- as a college student I had a old VW Bug, you could literally see the road passing by under your feet in some areas of the floor. Passengers thought I was kidding when I used to tell them to lift up their feet when going through big puddles- until the first time they got wet sneakers! But, I squeezed into every front row parking spot- next to every station wagon I could find, and in spaces sane people with nice cars wouldn't dare shoe-horn into. Heck... I never even locked the doors; I figured if anyone ever ventured inside they'd feel sorry for me and maybe leave me a few sympathy $$

It's absolutely liberating driving a car that the next repair is as simple as removing the plates and thumbing a ride home....

So, what did you fix in it?
How come do you collect so many prius cars?

I'm not a collector, my family drives them. One for everyone so far.

The rear hatch exterior handle broke
    Spoiler re-attachment
    R&R Rear Shocks
    R&R Water pump & Belt
Passenger seat belt airbag not functional
    Coolant drain, PCV, Plugs, Belt
    Front Bumper spoiler/Lip re-attached
    Change Front lights/bulbs
    Replace Driver's mirror

and I'm sure there's other stuff but that's for starters.
