I need help I just bought 05 prius from a dealer I don't know the history was told all it needed was a hybrid battery i thought ok easy fix i've done plenty before now. Ok now I have a 05 that I drive with known good parts so i pulled my hybrid battery and installed it in the new car the monitor showed engine charging inverter then going to the battery. However the bars on the battery graph start dropping. only code is a engine code 2102. please help. I'm stumped.I also noticed the old A/C condensor in the back.

    What warning lights are on?

What are you using to retrieve DTC?

DTC P2102 means that the engine throttle motor assembly has a problem. You can remove the engine air filter housing and try to clean the throttle body interior and throttle plate with throttle body cleaner. Spray some cleaner on a clean cloth and scrub out the dirt. Rotate the throttle plate by hand to expose the underside so you can clean the edge and bottom.

If that doesn't help, you can swap the throttle assembly from your working Prius. Swap the entire assembly, not just the motor. You should replace the gasket between the throttle assembly and the intake manifold to avoid introducing an air leak into the system which will cause another problem: lean air/fuel mixture.

If a Toyota dealer has been working on that car for most of its life, then ask for a printout of the vehicle service history. It can be very helpful to see what issues it may have had and what was (or wasn't) done to fix them. I would also get a mini VCI setup so you can monitor what's going on in the vehicle when the battery bars start dropping (ie are all the blocks losing voltage for some reason or is one block bringing down the entire pack). Once you have that then we can help you to know what to look for and how to fix it.

So you agree the inverter is probably the cause. do you think it is possible the throttle body is causing a no charge. I am using a solus snap-on scanner for code retrieval. no warning lights at all until battery is fully drained then the p3000 code triangle and main battery but that is because battery is drained.

all cells are dropping. vehicle service record would have been nice if I would have thought of it. I'm over a 100 miles from the dealership. I buy prius's from this dealership when they get em in so next time I will ask for one before I leave that is good advice. Thanks

No, my message said nothing about the inverter. If DTC P2102 is current then the check engine light should be on. Failure of the throttle body motor to operate properly would result in the engine stalling.

If the inverter is having a problem then you should see a red warning icon appear in the upper left corner of the MFD. It will look like the outline of a car with an ! superimposed over it. Further, DTC should be logged having to do with the inverter.

DTC P3000 is logged by the hybrid vehicle ECU and indicates that the traction battery has a problem.

It is possible that other DTC are being logged which would provide a clue about the nature of the problem and that your OBD-II code reader is not able to retrieve them. Since it sounds like you have a business acquiring and reselling Prius, I suggest that you invest in Toyota Techstream Lite (if you want the same diagnostic capability enjoyed by Toyota dealer techs) or Mini VCI (which is a knockoff sold on amazon.com or eBay). Both run on an Windows XP or Windows 7, 32 bit OS laptop.

Ok 2102 fixed. I noticed as soon as the power button is on. even when not running, the hybrid battery goes dead.I powered it on to clear the codes and the hybrid battery started dropping.

What are you using currently to monitor this?

I agree with the advice above......fix the P2102 first then move on to other issues as you find them.

    1. What did you do to fix P2102?
    2. What does "hybrid battery goes dead" mean?
    3. Can the car be driven now?
    4. If the car cannot be driven, can you at least rev up the engine while the car is sitting on the driveway, in P?
    5. If you can rev up the engine, shift the gear selector to D, hold the car in place by pressing hard on the brake pedal with your left foot, and floor the accelerator pedal with your right foot. This will force the gasoline engine to run. Since you are holding the car stationary with the brake pedal, the gasoline engine will spin MG1 which will charge the traction battery. Do you see the traction battery state-of-charge increasing on the MFD display, while you are running the engine?

Can you leave the car in Ready mode and AC running for at least 15 minutes? If the car can stay on, then your hv battery should be charging.

well p2102 is back. I'm thinking might be throttle body.I will go Monday and get a used one don't want to take mine off, then have to put it back on I only want to do it once. I was also wondering do i have to bleed the air out of the cooling lines when I change it. Thanks
