He also said he hates drivers trying to save gas & pulls-over at least two every year. I explained I had the cruise control set to 40 but the cop insisted I have to "Drive at least 60" in direct contradiction of signs erected by the legislature (I will get an image next time I pass it). He also laughed and said, "Welcome to California."

:oops:He knew he was wrong; that"s why you did not get a ticket!!:sneaky:

I think I would report him!!
Maybe other people reported him saying the same thing.(y)

Theirs good cops, and  BAD :censored: COPS!!

I think that it's perfectly legal for the OP to drive 40MPH on a 10-lane superslab in LA.
I also think that the OP fully knows that he should not do for reasons of public safety, and in a fair and just world he will probably be amply rewarded for his behavior......either by LEO or some other agent of justice.

    Just remember,
it's also perfectly legal for LEO to pull you over given probable cause.
People on both sides of this equation can be jerks if they want to. :)

I just wish the OP didn't drive a Prius.
We have enough ambassadors out on the roads already. :(

    Good Luck!

The only people endangering public safety are those driving outside the Government's defined speed range of 40 to 65 (aka the law). I feel safe when I'm doing 40, but very unsafe when doing 70-to-80 (the typical illegal pace on interstates). In other words I feel safer obeying the law then breaking the law. :) BTW what does your username ETC(SS) mean?

Insisting on doing 40, when everyone else is doing 70, creates more danger for everyone. Go with the flow, or go somewhere else.

My Official title is a little different since I have 2 warfare designations instead of just the one (SS) but that's a much longer story.

If you have a three-digit IQ, then you have to know that differential speed is what makes for truly spectacular crashes.
When I was in the sandbox, it was not at all uncommon to see epic collisions on some of the arrow-straight highways because you would have some idiots blasting down the freeway at over 240kph (150mph) not paying attention and colliding with other idiots going 60kph (40mph) in a Toyota pickup hauling a camel or two-----literally.

If you're creeping along at 40mph on I5 in the middle of morning rush hour traffic, then you either know or you should know that you represent more of a public hazard than the idiots in the leftmost lane who are topping 90.
It's not in keeping with my humble Christian beliefs, but I choose to believe that if some cell phone queen or little boy racer plows into your stern because they were not expecting somebody out there playing a game of "beat my personal best MPG", then you would just shrug the incident off as entirely "their fault."
    After all....legally?
It would be, just as legally you're entitled to creep along at 40.
    Just remember.
    Legally?
OJ isn't a murderer, and George Zimmerman had every legal right to take the law into his own hands too.

Being legal and being RIGHT isn't always the same thing.

    I hope I'm wrong.

I drive 55 mph in the right lanes. People say I am holding up traffic. I say I am driving the speed limit of a semi, so it's a speed most people are familiar with in the right lanes.

40 mph? I don't think I'd enjoy the white knuckled sweat at that speed on a California freeway fearing being rear ended or pulled over. The cop was a jerk. It may be legal for you to drive that speed. But did you save any gas or time being harassed? It may be better to be practical than to go just fast enough to be legal.

    SGH-T399 ?

^ 55-60 may not be an impractical or unsafe speed in your case.
If you're "going at the speed of a semi" then perhaps the best thing to do is get behind a semi (safely, not trying to draft.)

That way, people overtaking you from the rear have a large visual indicator that there might be slower traffic in front of them.

    He isn't listening.
There IS a law against what he was doing.
This whole "discussion" is ridiculous and smacks of trolling.
Don't stroke his ego farther. Just stop replying. He isn't listening anyway.

You guys must really hate Wayne Gerdes & other hypermilers (ecomodder.com) if you compare driving 40 to be equivalent to murder. The law states that drivers are supposed to follow the posted signage (minimum speed 40) which I did. And it was *Sunday morning* when everybody was still sleeping-off their drunk and highways empty, so please stop saying rush hour.
Why are they doing 70 when the speed limit is 65?
I find it funny you are defending the violators :D

    P.S.
When I'm on a single lane road, because there's no passing opportunity, I do the max speed posted on the sign. That eliminates the need to pullover and brake (waste of energy), and yet no other driver can say I'm too slow if I'm doing 55.

    Forgive me.
I keep forgetting that this guy is looking for a fight rather than fighting for a cause.

Who after all, does not like the idea of saving energy or contributing to a culture of lessened dependance on fossil fuels?
    It's a noble cause.

    Speaking to everyone else

    No, no, no

The hypermilers you have mentioned would disown you for your misrepresentation alone. Some of them are also aware of your history of things such as posting at InsightCentral of getting 100 mpg on a trip or tank, posting dash pictures belonging to another member. Nobody at PC, CleanMPG, ecomodder has met you personally, nor have you been in an article or spot in hypermiling.

The PC community is pretty smart that an outright flamewar has not started. Let's take it a step further and let this troll scream louder and louder for attention and NOT reply.

The only image I ever posted was ~120 mpg on a drive from Salt Lake City to Grand Junction. The wind was pushing my car down the highway, and that's why it was so high. Basically I got lucky.

The photo I took with 35 millimeter film, which I scanned into my PC, and posted back in 2002. (And it was not on insightcentral, but a different forum called yahoogroups.) The photo was genuine from my car dash, into my camera, from developed film, and into a JPEG for posting online. :D

That's the only photo I ever posted..... well that and the image of my insight with its "70 MPG" bumper sticker. (I should probably put one on my Prius too.)

OK...I'll say it. If this person "really" believes the BS he is blowing...he is a IDIOT!...and so is everyone that thinks that way...otherwise (and most likely) he is just a sh-tstir. Either-way, I allowed this person to wasted enough of my attention. Consider yourself ignored Troy Heagy.

Wayne Gerdes & the other hypermilers drive 40 or 45 on the interstate. That's why I said you'd probably dislike them.

By the way I just read a story of a Honda Insight getting rearended when he was doing 60 miles/hour on I-5 in central California (in the right / slow lane). The insight was pushed into the other lanes and spun-around before coming to a stop. The guy who hit the insight was taken-away in handcuffs.

And then if you drive 60, they've got you. Sounds like attempted entrapment to me. Some government departments are so strapped for cash, they'll try anything.

I worked with someone that had a house way out of town, on a busy single lane rural mountainous highway that also went on to a popular recreational lake, (Lake Berressa, CA). This guy use to get Great Joy in pissing everyone off by driving ever so slow on that highway, as it was so curvy, there was no way to (safely) pass. He would laugh and brag to us about how many people he had pissed off that week, by his slow "driving skills", even saying how this guy flipped him off in utter road rage, and that guy almost wrecked, as he laughed telling us all about the "jerks" he so pissed off... He had a very weird sense of "humor", but in reality, I think he just loved all the attention. His "quirkiness" was almost like an evil child, screaming for attention, laughing off the people that literally risked their lives to pass him. Yet, he drove this way totally on purpose, being fully prepared for the mayhem he would cause, at others expense. This "quirkiness" even spread into his non driving life at work as he would like to plot and say things, of 1/2 truths, to "stir up the pot" on our work crew, causing arguments between others, only to sit back and watch it, as it gave him great enjoyment, knowing He had caused it all. After time, the whole crew new of his tactics, and steered way clear of him as they knew he was just setting a web to entrap some poor fool, that was none the wiser. It was his way of playing "mind games", always at others expense. What was also weird, is this guy, was really a nice guy, when he was not "playing his evil games", so you would always have to wonder if he was "game playing" or not... Not to be at all raciest, but he was Filipino, and I have seen this kind of "quirkiness" -mind game playing- more than once in that culture of people, but have also seen it not as often, in other cultures / peoples too.. This all may be totally unrelated to this thread, but it sure reminds me of it...
