I'm asking this for my sister. She has a 2010 Prius IV we think, she got it certified used last year. It has the JBL system with a large screen. About a month ago her radio quit working, she still had NAV and Bluetooth though. She took it to the dealer she bought it from and asked them to check it out while she got it serviced. They said it was her radio and the whole thing needed to be replaced. They didn't charge her since it's a certified used car it has a longer warranty. The replacement came in, it was the display unit from a 2010 Prius IV and they replaced hers with it. However, they forgot to take her original DVD out of hers and the replacement didn't have one with it. She has nothing now, no radio, no NAV and no Bluetooth. So they ordered her a new one and had it shipped to her house. It arrived last week and it still didn't fix the problem. So now she's back up at the dealer to get it fixed and they have never seen a problem like her car is having now. Has anyone experienced this problem before? What was the fix?

No, and that sounds crazy. I'll bet they forgot to plug something in or something. There should be no reason she has nothing.

She says they think the computer in the radio is bad and they're waiting on the radio people to call them back. I don't know why there is such a problem. She went from having no radio but having NAV and Bluetooth to having nothing now.

It's hard to say but, the electronics nowadays are just so reliable that its hard to believe a brand new part is bad. Unfortunately, it sounds like you are at the mercy of the dealer technicians.

It might be a bad antenna, and one way to diagnose it is to try to tune channels and listen for static. That seems most likely when the same problem appears after the unit is replaced.

If the nav also quit working, it sounds like the result of too much fiddling by the tech.

It's not a "brand new" unit, but one that they got from a used car, presumably a junk one somewhere.

That's a good idea. I'll mention that to her. I think the only downside to this is that her original unit was replaced and after the replacement they didn't re-program the unit so it doesn't do anything, even come on. They sent the DVD to re-program it but it didn't work.

Would it be okay to post this in the main forum too, just in case people don't browse this sub-forum often? I know this one moves slower.

I would think it to be ok but no matter what anyone says, your situation doesn't change and unfortunately, your at the mercy of the dealer techs.

That's true, but at least if someone has been in this situation before, they might be able to provide some insight as to what it might be so that she can suggest it to the dealer techs and maybe get it fixed. I do feel like they've made it worse by just replacing the screen unit in the first place. It's like "Oh hey, this doesn't work...don't know why...just replace it.".

Yes, it's funny how so many components all seem to fail at once.

If you want to call an audio-install shop, they may be able to shortcut the problem to something simple. Worth a shot I hope. Good luck.

Probably so, but they'd charge her for it. Since it's covered under the certified used warranty she wouldn't pay anything for the dealer to do it.

    "Trained" mechanics often really aren't.
It is entirely possible that the present problem is because of something simple they are overlooking........like a blown fuse.

If she bought the car from a Toyota dealer and they don't know how to fix it, tell them to have a Toyota Tech to come look at the car. That's what they do when they don't know what the problem is with a Toyota.

Will do. She said they got it to work a couple of hours ago but as she was leaving the radio didn't work but everything else did. I haven't heard an update since. I'll tell her to have them get a Toyota Tech to look at it if they still can't get it after this. Thanks!

I had a new Toyota Camry that I was having a problem with the tire pressure monitoring system. The service personnel could not find out what the problem was and they called in a Toyota Tech to help them solve the problem. Good luck with your problem.

Thanks. She just told me that they determined it's the amplifier and they've ordered a new one and will meet her with a loaner car wherever she's at while they take her car back and fix it. After having Fords myself until my Prius I am impressed with Toyota's service.

That certainly is good service. Can't complain about that.

Now they are telling her it's the amplifier and they've ordered the part plus once it gets here they'll bring a loaner car to wherever she's at while they take her car back and fix it. Good deal since we live about 45 min from that dealership.

I suppose it doesn't matter much if she eventually gets it fixed under warranty, but it seems like a lot of rigmarole for what sounded like a fairly simple problem.
