How do you work your Navigation?

So for those of you that have mastered the mystery of the 2014 Navigation on our Prius, any suggestions on how to enter a destination, quickly???

    Long Back Story:
We took a trip to Monterey CA this week in our new Prius (2014 opt pack 3). We have been to Monterey often enough to not need navigation. But when we got closer to Monterey I thought I would try to use the voice command for the first time, to get us to the fisherman's wharf. After like 3 tries, and it kept trying to route us to somewhere in Oregon, I gave up. After a wonderful lunch on the Wharf, we got back to the parked Prius, got in, and tried to enter our hotel address into the Nav. We went to the destination screen, went to the zip code, pressed it, and it gave three options for zip codes, "KY 1, KY 2, and KY 3"??? We were dumbfounded! Where was 9xxxx? It said town of Cayman, and we tried to put in Monterey, to no avail. Tried to type in the street, nope, no go, no option, can't do. We finally called our Toyota Dealership and cried in distress for some help, as the owners manual was no help either. We told them we could not change the town, or Zip code, and they went out to a new 14 Prius to try and figure out what we had done. After 10 Min.'s they figured out our Nav, thought it was in the Cayman Islands! We had to get it back into the USA -location first-, to get to correct database, zip codes, etc... I guess in my last voice command attempt, it thought the last request was for the Cayman Islands, thus leaving the Nav & us stranded in another world from where we really were! Why oh Why would Toyota put a Nav system in a USA car with a Cayman Island database, or even ability??? Why would the GPS & Nav even allow you to enter a Cayman Isl. selection? What, is the Prius a secret submarine or something? ( I have not found that button yet-- hmm, "Submarine mode")... I wonder if the nav has the whole world in its database? So, what is the easiest way to enter a destination, or, has anyone had any luck with the voice command prompts for entering a destination? I sure wish we could have brought the "U-connect" system out of our Dodge Dart as it was SO user friendly! Maybe this is a user friendly system for someone in,,, ---> JAPAN!;)

Toyota sells cars worldwide. My NAV, which is aftermarket, requires you to first enter the state, then city, then street specifying N, S, E or W and finally the address number. No voice command so you enter this on the touch screen while stopped.

The best way to use the nav is to turn it off and use a garmin instead. Works perfectly every time, and I can even use it when the car is in motion. Woah! The nav in the tech package 5 I have is ironically so embarrassingly bad I don't even want it showing on the screen. I have to push the audio button after a phone call just to get something on the screen that isn't that piece of crap nav.

Funny, our salesman had no problem using the voice nav once he got me to stop interfering, I can get impatient with salesmen. :) It is so different from what I'm used to, but then so was my Nuvi 2555 from the previous 350. I still forget to change the city before I start a POI search, etc., and I've had it for 2+ years. I may still resort to my Nuvi for POI searches and just let the Prius nav get me from point to point, but I'm going to give a real shot before I label it junk. To be honest, I've yet to find a built-in nav that I like as much as the Nuvi's I've had.

The Nuvi is simple to use unlike the complicated Toyota navigation system.

Imho, it's nearly unusable so I would chalk that up in the broke column.

Never use the Zipcode unless u know for a fact this address is in that zip.
when U enter the city name, the system searches for all the zip code in the city.
What kind of voice command did you give? U can always cancel a route. I am not sure your dealer is well trained, he may need to go thru training.
Not really sure what U did and what condition is nav is in.

your U-Connect on your Dart uses Garmin?

well this system with the Zip is the 1st system Toyota launches. if U go back to prev generation U will not find this system. Look at the HMI of this and then the HDD premium and the new system on 15CY. U will find more similarities between HDD premium and 15CY than this zip code system.

U have to bring this up to Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they are asking auto makers to lock more things up. what does disable may become a law (time to write in to the gov), maybe a good time to move to Europe. Toyota cars there does not disable thing.

i attempted to use it but not going to... it wasnt the reason why i bought my Prius... I am in it for the MPG...

so with that.. I use my cell phone... and WAZE which is by far well better than anything out there. It does what many apps do in one...
traffic reroute (does it well!!!), gas stations, road hazzards, weather, and Po-Po 5.0!!!!!!!
user community based. (I dont want to get into the.. you shouldnt be touching your phone while driving).. you can use WAZE and not touch your phone... it is accurate, has told me accident ahead, take exit... then put me back on highway RIGHT after the accident!!!!
well worth looking into... plus points based so you can compete... I am very competitive and to add that to the list is a bonus..

Before I updated to the 2014 I was looking at one of the app radios that would display Waze right from the phone. I haven't had much issue with the nav except its non-intuitive entry. Otherwise it does do A->B. Paired with the traffic feature the other day it asked me to reroute but I stayed where I was so didn't get to test it. I think once I learn the easy way to enter data it will suffice -- but if entune added Waze support that would be cool.

Thanks for all the replies! I agree, I surly wish i could have bought this car -- WITHOUT the Navigation! Yet,, to get the sun roof option, which was a "must have" for my wife, it came with the nav.= opt. package 3.

So are you saying the 2014 Toy Nav does have the traffic alert / re-route feature in it???

Since posting this thread, we have learned, (If the Nav has you in USA), if we enter the city first, for a destination, the rest flows fairly easy. We still have not even tried the voice command, successfully, but that will be next. One thing i found that i do like about it, is it does store the "previous destinations". So if I am going to more than one place, I can enter all the destination before the day, tell it to "go", then cancel the route, so as to be able to pull it up later in the day as a "Previous destination", to easily -quickly- route to as our 2nd destination. It saves time not having to enter it when your in a hurry to get to that 2nd destination.

With my iPhone connected to the USB port (Android work on Bluetooth) I can enable traffic in Entune :)

As you know way back a long time ago if you wanted one option you could just buy that one but now if you want one option you have to upgrade to the $4,000 package and get four that you don't want to get the one you want. They know how to get deep in our pockets. I just bought a new Avalon Hybrid XLE Touring. I just had to have and I am glad that I got the blind spot monitoring in the outside mirrors and the rear cross traffic monitoring but I HAD TO PAY A FORTUNE TO GET THOSE SAFETY OPTIONS BECAUSE I HAD TO GO ALL THE WAY UP TO THE TOURING, THEREFORE, I HAD TO BUY SOME EXPENSIVE OPTIONS THAT I WILL NEVER USE. Brilliant marketing by the auto companies.
