considering trading my PiP for a Volt

thats a great price, all the best! i would consider it if the volt wasn't so small. i make a lot of use of the prius space. i hope the next gen volt get's larger!

 

I just upgraded from a 2012 prius to a 2014 pip. Deciding on Volt versus PIP was tough. I choose the PIP because I loved my old car, and at times I wish I had more cargo space. I also drive a lot of miles (2000+ per month) and I really need a great hybrid and a very reliable car.

It was tough with both cars being about the same price.

 

No trade your daughters car and give her the PiP cause it's no fun playing spot the PiP with just one in town.

You know GM has the recall notice already printed just waiting for you to buy.

$62k is the minimum net income to use the full $7,500 credit. Single with only standard deduction, one exemption, and one half self employment tax deduction. Highest tax rate for lowest income. Everybody else will need considerably more with their lower tax rate and added credits and deductions. $32k for the PiP $2,500 credit.

But if you can use it mostly as an EV and don't need the space maybe the Volt fits you better now.

 

One of my faculty colleagues has a Volt, and previously owned a Prius (non PiP). We take turns driving to lunch, so I've had a few rides in the Volt. It's clearly more cramped than the PiP, which is the first thing I notice (and mentally can't picture being able to haul the stuff I take my Prius for granted for). By the time she's on campus, her EV range is depleted so I've only experienced it while the ICE was on. The ICE isn't very loud, and acceleration doesn't modulate the ICE (at least, not by much). Acceleration is definitely better than the Prius.

However, I can relate that she's unhappy with the fit and finish of the Volt. Examples: Many of the edges on plastic trim are rough, almost enough so to cut fingers. I felt those rough edges and she's right - you don't see that on Toyota products. The navigation system screens look more like my 2004 Prius' rather than the '14 PiP.

When I was researching plug-in hybrids my main trepidation about the Volt was its long term reliability and resale value. Nothing has convinced me that these are not still significant concerns, albeit so far the Volts are holding up well.

I was thinking of buying a volt also... But worry about the reliability... I had quite a few GM cars in the past and they all have problems... Since I am so lucky all the times, my problems were the weird ones... They can't fix it... Someday... I might try again...

 

I traded in my 2012 PIP for a 2014 Volt and couldn't be happier.
I was very concerned with GM's bad rep- but it's almost like the Volt was made outside of GM. I've had my Volt since March- put 5.4k miles on it... zero defects, zero recalls, zero trips back to the dealer- and with 5.4K miles on it, I'm still on the same gas from the day I took delivery!

The Volt can go up to 101mph on battery alone, no 62-64mph EV limit, I started out with 38mi EV range back in March- I'm at 48-50 EV range with the warmer weather... and that's with the AC on. For winter driving- you can turn the traction control off via a switch if you get stuck in snow. If you don't need the 5th seat, I can't see any downside to the Volt!

 

I rode in a Volt the other day, it was kinda like riding in an electric Camaro.

 

...the $22k offer on the used PiP sound good. Seems like new Pips in CA were not much more than that (after incentives)

Morgantown is Subaru land. Has been since the 70's and the Brat. Some sort of local fixation on AWD. You could charge your PiP or Volt at the Subaru dealer since that's the Nissan dealer too. Need to get you a "Powered by Coal" bumper sticker so you'll blend in. Free Ramp dinner on me or Bumps if your here next spring. Or buckwheat pancakes this fall.

Volt gets you new tires and warranty period.

 

You are going to have to explain what Ramps are. LOL. Only people who are from WV know that. I left there a long time ago. I know what they are.

 

How often are you going to be driving the 500 miles to see your daughter, though? And remember that the shorter journeys seem to take more electricity in the Volt than the PiP. However, if you have more 15-50 mile trips, those figures make a lot of sense.

 

I know what they are, we used to get The West Virginia Hillbilly.

 

I have not had any of those since I was a teenager and that was a very long time ago. Cut them up and put them in pinto beans. Little cornbread on the side. Good stuff.

 

I've had my Volt for a year now, the Prius for two.
The Volt has been an excellent car for my purposes. It's got 13k miles on it and gets me to work and back (38 miles round trip) with no gasoline at all 9 months of the year. I've driven roughly 240 miles for every gallon of gasoline used (gasoline usage mainly from a 1900 mile vacation trip).
Compared to the Prius it's better in NVH, handling and throttle response. Accommodations in the front seat are nice--the back seat's tight.
I've found the interior fit and finish to be at least as good as the Prius with no rattles or creaks. The materials and appearance are definitely nicer.
