Good point!! If I didn't have solar panels to keep my rate at the baseline tier the PiP wouldn't make much sense. That's why I bought it the same month the solar was installed.

 

We've had solar for over 1 year now. Before that I calculated our average per kilowatt was $0.25. That one hot September last year we still hit tier 3. But overall our bill has gone down about 90%.

Its definitely hot here although it could be worse. My billing month is almost over and I'm at 11.66 kWh/day with a baseline of 15 kWh/day. So far I've never gone over baseline for a billing month. I charge the PiP one or two times a day.

My June bill came out to 17.7 cents per kWh, so I expect my new bill to go up by about 10% for July (I got up to approximately a quarter through Tier 3 last month).

Assuming 12 kWh is the same as one gallon of gas (4 full 3 kWh charges of 12.5 miles each = 1 gallon gas per 50 miles), my July electricity rate was about $2.124 of electricity per 50 miles. My average cost for gas in June was $3.932 per gallon, so still much cheaper for me to charge. However, we were also lucky and did not have to turn on our 30 year old AC unit during June. Fingers crossed this summer won't be as hot as previous summers.

Unfortunately my HOA does not allow us to install Solar, otherwise I would have considered it a while back ago.

 

...re: nat gas price, it's complicated but if you were running a power plant you would get the low nat prices. Unfort the way they market nat gas homeowner's pay a much higher price that is does not reflect the wholsesale price decline. A slight decline only.

 

Really? Our HOA doesn't have a choice, solar must be allowed. I thought that was a state law.

Thanks for the link. I'll take a look into it. I guess I partially never bothered to deal with it since my electricity bill is usually less than $100 per month, but it's still something I'm interested in looking into.

That is a nice rate structure for conservationists. I wish it was mine.
My co-op charges 10 cents a kWh up to a large amount, but tacks on a $30 a month connection fee.

 

My electricity bill averaged about $100 a month before solar. The first 12-month period after solar it was $232 for the year including charging the PiP which I didn't have before solar. Of course we didn't have much of a Winter so I might not do as well for the present 12-month period. None-the-less it represents about an 8% return on investment.

 

I don't think it necessarily works that way. Just because you are poor doesn't mean you will use less electricity. When I was growing up, we had up to 20 people crammed into a single home. We often had $300+ monthly electricity use because we'd be well into Tier 4. Now that I am on my own living in a household of 6 people, we have gotten as low as $50 a month. We make way more money than my parents did.

So that's about $1000 savings per year? How much did solar cost you? How did you calculate ROI?

 

Sadly our Nations Gov has done nothing to encourage using our most abundant natural resource, Nat Gas! In the mean time, the Nat Gas companies are building massive export terminals to ship that (BAD unwanted & over abundant), Nat Gas to nations that see its value. (Which i bet the brilliant Gov will soon figure out how to tax the exported nat gas, we should be using here)... So we keep burning coal, importing oil from countries that hate us, and making them ever more rich, to fund wars against us. Makes perfect cents to me!

I have a new 11Kw solar system on my roof I installed 8 months ago. It was not financially viable without your Gov tax dollar funded incentive plan, that i fully took advantage of. It locked in my electricity rate at .09 Kw for the next 20 years, So thank You ALL so much for helping me lower my electric bill!!!

We're facing a 15-20% increase here in WV, pending PSC approval. Our 10.5 cent rate would jump to roughly 13. Personally I won't care (solar array and conservation) but commercial and retail customers will be hit hard. A local graphite plant runs electric bills in excess of $1,000,000 a month as it is and they are having a rough go.

The neighbor's that use 8 mega watts a month for a residence in the winter might finally be convinced to make some conservation efforts....

 

Haven't had a grow room since college. Server room is a part of it, though. And actually, the bill says that I use less than my neighbors, although I'm not on the lowest rung. do not know -- we have a lot of infrastructure (pumps for water/septic, oil heat) so that might be part of it. Lots of weather that needs taming in Maryland.

 

When Lake Mead dries up (more), it will be very interesting to see how they will handle their electricity demand (not to mention water).

 

It seems to me if the government taxes exported natural gas, that would militate more domestic use.

Of course, abundant natural gas doesn't help if you can no longer drink local water supplies due to fracking chemicals.
