When I bought my new to me 2008 prius II. part of the deal was to have a 2nd fob. Dealer gave me a new fob and programed it.

I use the original fob that is scratched up etc and have the brand new fob in my safe as a back up. Would the new fob lose its memory if I took the battery out? Or is it one of those deals with the fob being in the safe, the battery would go dead pretty much at the same rate being in the fob as it would be out of the fob?

When the fob's battery I use daily goes dead, I don't want to grab the new fob only to find out that battery is dead as well.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I've never had this battery issue. The new remote in a safe should outlast one that's being used daily

    Fobs don't lose memory

depending on where the fob is in relationship to other electronic items in your house, it could go dead sooner. i would advise removing it from the key. no, the key won't lose the programming, did you test it after receiving to make sure it's programmed correctly?

Yes, I did. Actually I checked it before I even pulled the car out of the service building. I didn't want to take any chances. the dealership I bought the car from was about 140mi from home.

The new fob is in a safe. The closest electronic to it is my computer and my cellphone which would be roughly 8ft away.

pulling the battery is a good idea, but if it goes dead, they're only a few bucks. you might do well to replace them both at the same time anyway.

Are these types of batteries that I should be able to get at a drug store or at Walmart or is it the type I have to go to the dealership to get?

It's a common size shared by many devices. Any drug store that sells batteries should have them.

The fob battery is a CR2032 size and any drugstore will sell that model.

The car is programmed to recognize the fob, and you don't have to worry about volatile memory in the fob. So you can remove the fob battery or not, it doesn't matter.

OP, FYI, you can keep your spare fob in your safe with no battery in it. No chance of the battery leaking and ruining your spare fob.

If you ever needed to use it, you can still start your car with it, even without a battery. Just hold the fob up to the Start button and press the brake pedal. It might take a few seconds, but your Start button should go green and allow you to press Start.

This is not correct with regards to 2G, which has a slot in the instrument panel. The Smart fob has to be inserted into the slot to get the car to recognize the fob, if there is no battery or a dead battery in the Smart fob. The non-Smart fob has to be inserted into the slot at all times that the car is in any mode other than IG-OFF.

My fob battery went dead months ago. I'm still using it manually as described above. I refuse to pay $3.49 for a battery. I'm looking for a $2 deal that doesn't require me to buy in bulk. So don't worry about the fob battery. You can still use it and drive like it's 1999.

These batteries are less than 25 cents in bulk. Want some?
