I'm sure it is possible, and that was an option that we considered, however as I recall, we didn't really pursue that option for two reasons... First it was quite expensive... I believe the ECU was around $1000 and you'd also need to get new keys that were associated with that ECU as you can't reprogram your existing keys, so that's another $200 or $300 per key. The second problem was that no one really knew what it would take to get the car to talk to the new ECU. Most likely it would require some programming through techstream, which would require a trip to the dealer (who very well might just laugh and turn you away) or another expensive purchase.

When we were doing this several years ago, the cars were new and parts were expensive. At this point, you may be able to find an ECU (and ideally the keys that match it) in a junk yard somewhere and that might make replacing the ECU a bit more cost effective. However, there is still the unknown of what would need to be done with techstream and how to get that done.

Anybody know if this will also work on the 2012 Prius v Model Two? I think I would be in completely over my head, but want to know if it's even possible before I start dreaming about upgrading.

BTW - thanks for all the information on the site! Very helpful!

    Edit - Corrected to show "... 2012 Prius v ..." instead of "... 2012 Prius V ..."

I haven't really looked at the 2012 Prius v at all, so this is purely speculation, however, assuming that your car already has one door SKS then I would imagine that this would work for you. I imagine that that SKS system would work about the same way on the newer car. I would guess that the wire locations and part numbers from my document would be different, however, if you want to spend a bit of time playing around I'd be happy to try to help you get it working.

Thanks, Brett! The car does have the one door SKS system. I'll need to mull this over a bit to see if I can gather up the confidence to try it. I have zero experience with this sort of thing - I haven't done much to a car besides change the oil and a headlight/brake light, so the wiring side of this seems a bit overwhelming.

Did you do any further research on this? I literally just bought a Prius V 3 tonight and already wish I had the SKS on the hatch and passenger door. It was just on my '05 so I didn't even think to check to see if the SKS packages were different.

I'm thinking the parts will be ordered pretty quickly once I get the wife's blessing to spend more $$.

I see you're in the Chicago suburbs. Where at? I'm in NW Indiana so if we need to compare notes / help, I'm down for that.

Alright... I've found all but one part for a 2012 V. I assume the 2013 will be the same parts.
I can't find the wiring harness anywhere. Can anyone assist?

For reference, the antenna is the same part # as shown in the write up. For a 2012 V in Gray, the handle for right side appears to be: 69211-74020-B4

EDIT: I guess I must need a different rear door switch too but have yet to find it. Anyone?

I haven't really done any more research on it. Once the weather warms up, I'll have to decide if I want to follow through with it. I am most nervous about the wiring aspect of this - that and the fact that I have ZERO experience working on cars. I don't want to screw something up and void the warranty.

I'm in Tinley Park and would be happy to compare notes with you. Do you have the Gray one as well? I'd assume all the parts would be the same for the 2012 and 2013 models since nothing really changed.

Yep. I have the gray one V 3. I'm trying to get the wiring harness verified but I think I have everything else. I'm going to post and see if some kind soul would give me a VIN for a V 5 because the parts guy I've been E-mailing can't find the wiring harness.

I can't find it in any of the TIS documents either unfortunately.

Does anybody know for sure that the Prius One has a different certification ecu than the others? It would be really nice if it was possible to add at least driver door SKS to the One...

Was just forwarded to this thread. Awesome. I only plan on adding the rear hatch so it looks like I need to spend ~$120.

Please forward wiring instructions for the addition of SKS to hatch & passenger. I've already purchased & installed hardware, just need wiring instructions for my 2013 Level II

Note: install instructions written by BrettS for adding SKS to passenger & rear hatch are excellent and read as found on my 2013 Prius II.

    Hello,

Perhaps Brett can give me some help here... I have a one door SKS and I only wanted to install the passenger SKS. I installed the passenger SKS and then wired using wire taps per Brett's instructions and hooking the antenna in series via the red wire only. The green wire on the certification ECU was not touched. Unfortunately after everything was connected, the passenger handle did not lock or unlock the door. I figured that the wire taps were not crimped enough so I tried crimping them harder. This didn't work and now the driver side SKS no longer works! I'm looking for input on this one as wifey is not particularly happy with my right now!

A little info: I'm using 14-18 wire taps that I found at Ace Hardware.

    Thanks much!

If neither lock nor unlock us working on the driver's side, then my first guess would be the antenna... Since you connected the new antenna in series with the original antenna then you had to break that circuit to get the new antenna installed. If there is a bad connection in there somewhere then that circuit is likely still broken and the car can't detect the key and won't lock or unlock the doors. Verify all of the antenna connections first and see if that fixes the driver's side. If not, then you may want to undo all of the changes you made and try to get the driver's side working again. Once things are functioning normally again, then try again slowly verifying all of the connections as you go.

I'd even suggest testing it after each step. First reconnect the second antenna and make sure the driver's side still works properly. You can test the passenger antenna by leaving the key fob on the passenger handle and walking around to the driver's door and touching it to lock and unlock the car. Since the two antennas are connected in series the car will detect the key with the passenger antenna and allow the driver's lock and unlock buttons to work.

Then connect everything to the light blue and black wires on the ECU and verify the lock function on the passenger and driver's doors. And assuming things are still going well, make the final connections to the yellow wire on the ECU and test again.

Hopefully that helps and let me know how it goes.

Has anyone done this on a Prius V III yet? I'm assuming directions will be the same, just want to see if anyone has the correct part numbers, etc....

Update: I have ordered all of the parts, and have confirmed that there is no wiring harness on the Prius V, so hopefully the connection for the passenger side door handle is wireless, we will see once I get the parts in and start taking the car apart!

Yes, job is done, there is a thread in the V modifications forum with updates, and I will post final instructions soon
