Where are you putting the negative cable when jumping? Positive in the fuse box, negative where?

New battery should be around 12.9, but yours will probably arrive at around 12.5. If it's not 12.5 or more, you might want to return it to avoid issues later

12.9 volts out of the box before you install it. if it's less, get a trickle charger and charge overnight. check again before installing.

When fitting the new battery it is easy-er to undo the negative cable where it is bolted to the bodywork under the rear light. Remove the battery and fit the negative lead to the new battery before putting it in place.
Make sure the area under the bolt fixing to the bodywork is clean and free of rust. This is a common problem area for bad connections.
When fitted check the voltage at the front jump point. This should be the same as the battery voltage, hopefully around 12.9/13 volts. When you try to make the car ready do not be surprised if you have to try twice before success. This is quite normal as "dorunron" correctly stated in post (12).

My wife disagrees. She thinks I spend way too much time hanging out here.

Back in the days when your car wouldn't start, you would check voltage and just go out a buy a new battery. Not sure why it's any different in the Prius. The Prius is still a car you know ;)

The short answer is Japanese standard battery posts and reverse orientation. Not a battery you can find at Walmart or even most Auto supply stores.

OP however is in NJ. One might guess that a Toyota dealership is not too far away, but who knows.

    Update...

Old battery out of car...measured 7v on meter.

Waiting on FedEx. tap, tap, tap.

I'm sure I can find the answer to this question on line or in the forums, but off hand, anyone know if there is a way to determine the age of the YUASA battery I removed? Could really care less how old it is for the purposes of this thread, but hypothetically, if the old battery is only 1 year old and hypothetically, if my replacement battery were to fail after one year, I'd like to be aware that I have a BIGGER problem than just a dead battery.

There is a date stamp code on the top of the Yuasa battery in the order of DD/MM/YY.

If the battery says YUASA on it, it's probably original. A replacement from Toyota would say "True Start"

So October 15, 2008. Almost 6 years old. What a surprise that the Toyota dealer who sold the car used, to the person from whom I bought it (a good friend, so I know he's not lying to me), told him a little over a year ago, that there was a BRAND NEW battery in it.

And car salesmen wonder why the average person doesn't trust them.

If you believe the above comment, then you shouldn't be surprised by the battery being original

So, FedEx deliveryman confirmed I was his last stop of the day. 7:10 pm delivery for the battery. Out of the box it measured 13v. Good so far. 30 minutes later everything is installed except for the carpet and cosmetic pieces. I check the voltage from the fuse box jump hub.... ZERO. Short moment of panic until I realize, in my haste I forgot to connect the negative/ground terminal.

As soon as I touch the clamp to the post, lights that are supposed to illuminate begin to illuminate, beeps that are supposed to beep start beeping, and things that are supposed to hum begin to hum. I again checked the voltage from the front jump hub and it reads 12.3-12.4.

Now for the true test; would it start? Started right up and off I went cruising around the neighborhood. Little did I realize how many Prii are in my neighborhood. In my gated community of 85 homes, there are 14 Prii. One house accounting for three all on its own.

Thank you to all of you for your assistance and patiently answering what surely seem like silly questions. $157 and a little, well ALOT of sweat later...

    YAHOO!!!

A bit like booting up the avionics systems of a Space Shuttle. You don't "start" a Prius....you boot up a Prius and then IT decides whether to start the ICE, after it's bevy of ECUs and sensors have conferred and reached an amicable agreement ;)

    Yep!

GrumpyCabbie posted a great line from Llewyn (sp ?) a few days ago along the same vein. He called it 'driving by committee' :)
