I am 44 and have lived and been driving in CA since I turned 16. Every car since my first has always had tinted windows all the way around minus the windshield, some even limo tint. When I was 16 and had lowered cars with loud stereos I got them all the time and back then it was a fix it ticket. I lived in a small town so the local PO would just sign them off. Since then (now I am probably jinxing myself) I have NEVER received a tinted windows ticket. I think they only ticket if something else is suspicious or going on, i.e like you were speeding and instead of giving you a speeding ticket with points they give you a fix it tickets which most would prefer.

The officer that just got shot and killed by a driver on a routine traffic stop here in MN must not have been a coward, he didn't ask him to roll his window down.

protect me??? from what? never happened in 55 years yet. I can protect myself. and let me tell you something: if you live in a country where you're more afraid of the police than you are of criminals, you live in a police state. there are more than a few sadistic liar cops out there; one just killed a boy in st Louis the other day for no reason. yes there are many good cops, but there's a lot of bad ones too. a bad cop is worse than no cops at all.

and I bet you'd have a very hard time finding a dangerous criminal that was also a tree-hugger.

well that sure sucks, and that cop was probably one of the good ones. but maybe he should have. and called for backup. I do hope they catch the killer and I also hope they have the death penalty in MN. if they don't, they should.

ok, I got 35% on my windows, and I can see just fine. and I look for bicycles, pedestrians and motorcycles. your gonna get killed by a moron playing with their phone, not an alert driver with lightly tinted windows. if you look out through 35%, it is light tint.
it should be illegal to install limo tint on the front windows, so that tint shops will refuse to do it. I've driven cars with limo tint and it scares me because I can't see out the car. those customers are idiots, but I can't tell them that unless I want to be unemployed.

    You completely missed my point.

I need to see you. Morons on phones have tinted windows too.

I don't give a $#!+ if you can see me or not. but with 35% you can see me. I hope you're not one of those jerks who thinks its ok to ride in the center of the lane and block traffic. twits who do that almost deserve to get hit. almost.

Your contempt for fellow users of the road, including those who must cross the street where it intersects the dedicated bicycle lanes and trails, is duly noted.

Check your road rage at the border.

I'd just like to have a bit more tint for sun block, a little less heat in the summer, and to look a little cooler./

All that without POing anyone. Is that around 25% to 30%??

Steve Without a location in your profile, no one can know the laws in your state. The law varies by locality.

Forgot that, but I posted what Vermont's is.

No metallic or mirrored allowed at all. No tint allowed on passenger or driver's window.

WindshieldNon-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
Front Side WindowsNo tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side WindowsAny darkness can be used.
Rear WindowAny darkness can be used.

Pretty wide open, amazingly. I don't want pitch black either.

You need to spend some time OUTCONUS (out of the U.S.) before you talk about "police states."
No....it doesn't have to be a steamy jungle where you have to keep a wad of local Monopoly money to bribe military check points.......go to the EU.
They don't give little "$25 fix-it tickets" for equipment violations. ;)

You're absolutely right. 35-percent is legal.
It's also clear that you don't give a rats.

I hope that changes some day. ;)

actually, I rarely get angry except when a p'up driver deliberately merges into my prius, (you may have experienced these guys before) because he despises it and any tree hugger who would drive one. I live near the w&od trail which has a grade crossing with sterling blvd. I generally will stop if i see folks waiting to cross. but frankly, in places like the DC metro area where traffic is terrible anyway, either keep it moving or get the hell off the road. respect is earned, contempt is free.

I've been to mexico, and china (dragon lady's home). cross a double yellow = no ticket, no stop. blow a red = no prob. go the wrong way down a narrow 1 way street with a bus??? cops didn't seem to mind that either. 1 guy had a refrigerator on the back of his scooter, on the sidewalk. didn't see him get a ticket. blue fog lights? they'll get you stopped in this area. I got an inspection ticket for blue-dots in MD, but not a problem in communist china. and i saw much more that would not fly over here-- some of it was insanely unsafe imho, but no biggie in china. some American cops want to be storm troopers apparently, and they got a chip on their shoulder like they just dare you to make them taze you. cops seemed pretty relaxed in china.
I went past a policia convoy in Baja California in a rental car doing about 55 mph. then I realized the 45 signs were kph. maybe they were too busy to pull over a tourista. I do not know.
I'm sure some of the folks in Europe are even more anal retentive than white americans. I know in Germany they have strict inspection laws; my friend's fil saw my chevelle and had his daughter translate that my chevelle would not be allowed on the road in deutschland. i told her to tell him I'm glad I'm not over there.
in VA the front windows are only allowed tinted 50%. stupid law, so I ignore it. I hope you're not gonna squeal on me.

I am fairly sure the front Prius windows are tinted to their near maximum already. Many people get by with excessive tinted windows, but then, there will always be a bored cop sooner or later to tag them!

Will the metallic clear tint block cell phone signal's? Or,, will they just go through the metal roof? OR,,, do you have to roll down your windows to make a good cell phone call???

I wonder if you could plead the fifth?
"I am afraid I cannot roll up my windows due the fact that doing so may serve to produce self incriminating evidence." :)

[This has nothing to do with tints, but does relate directly to some bicycle contempt expressed in this thread.]

    Re: bicycle safety
While my summer's support work for major bicycle events ended almost two weeks ago, I hadn't yet settled down enough to re-address your contempt for cyclist safety. But a local tragedy yesterday requires that this be brought back up now.

In my state, when safety demands it, it is quite reasonable and legal for bicycles to ride in the center of the lane. Even in traffic. I often go through one such place near home where there is no shoulder, the lane is too narrow for cars to pass safely, and on the downhill I'm easily doing the speed limit. Riding on the edge just invites numerous speeders to pass dangerously on a blind corner (when the speed trap is inactive), so I ride in the middle.

Downtown Seattle has another hazardous section. Many experienced riders stay in a general purpose lane so drivers can more easily see them. But a young woman who stayed out of the car lane and in her proper bike lane was killed yesterday:
Cyclist killed days before city to upgrade notorious bike lane

To repeat: if you visit my state, check your road rage at the border.

nice mantra you got there. rage and irritation aren't the same.

I got no problem with any vehicle going the speed limit, and I understand there are places where bikes have no room to move over, but when you're holding up traffic unnecessarily, then f u.

downtown anywhere is a whole 'nother deal. since cities in general suck in all ways possible, I try to avoid ever going into them, if I must, I use the metro if I can. since traffic generally crawls between stoplights, bicycles really aren't much of a holdup, compared to everything else going on.

in the 'burbs, frankly, it would make more sense for slow moving bikes to use the sidewalk, of course yielding the right of way to pedestrians. it would be less dangerous for all concerned.

but then there's the jerk on a bike, you pass him if he finally moves over enough to let all the cars by without bumping him, or else when there's room to pass. but then, while your sitting at a red light behind a line of cars, he blows through the intersection, and now all those cars got to pass his slow @$$ again. if you gonna use the street like a motorized vehicle, then you should have to obey the same rules as everyone else or you deserve a ticket for running a red. and how many of you hate it when a motorcycle splits lanes to get in front of all the cars sitting at a red light? certainly, he's not slowing you down by doing that and you'll not catch up to him again. but its ok for a bike to run a red?

or we can make this deal: you keep right, and I won't wish you a ticket for running a red, cause I understand you need to keep your momentum going, and its only gonna slow us all down more if you got to restart pedaling at every intersection. courtesy goes both ways.
