We are a group of four students of Mechanical engineering. We are doing our final year project for developing efficient system for exhaust energy recovery. Our area of interest is Prius 2nd generation Engine model (1NZ-FXE). Please some one suggest how we can estimate and measure exhaust gas temperature, as it has prime importance in my project.

    1. There is no exhaust gas temperature sensor. It is not obvious to me how such a sensor would help the engine ECU in any meaningful way.
    2. If you want to measure exhaust gas temperature, that would be easy: Use a handheld infrared, instant read thermometer on the exhaust manifold.
    3. A better choice for your project would be the current 3G Prius engine since that uses exhaust gas heat to heat engine coolant, which is a relatively innovative design.

Thank you for your help in this regard Mr. Patrick. However on the second point I would like to say that the temperature measured by the infrared temperature would provide me surface temperature of the exhaust pipe but my aim is to know the gas temperature. So would there be a considerable difference between the two temperatures if the engine is not run for too long.

Wonder if you could infer current flow to the heated upstream O2 sensor as a measure of EGT. You wouldn't want to use the downstream reading from the cat since it would be significantly higher. I don't know for sure if Prius O2 sensors are heated. I know other vehicle sensors are.

CAN bus reports catalytic bed temps. That's the closest alternative I can think of.

In that case, disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and measure the temperature of the exhaust gas directly using the instant read IR thermometer, or whatever other temperature sensor you choose to utilize.
