Writes123 was talking about Timing belts and stuff. If you brought the mechanic a timing belt and he did the labor, the belt would not be warrantied. So if it breaks prematurely (like in a week), he'll blame the belt. If it's a water pump and it leaks in 1 week after replacement, he will not replace it for free, labor would have to be paid again to change out the defective parts.

An interesting point of discussion. I have asked him this question before when installing 1k a piece air struts for my Lexus. He verified that they were OEM and fit my vehicle. He would warranty the labor and PART. IF he decided to go back on his warranty for the part, I would just have him uninstall it free of charge, bring it to the Lexus dealer 3 miles away and have them replace the part under their parts warranty and then bring him a brand new replacement part from the dealer and then he would reinstall it again for free. I would definitely NOT have to pay for another install. Also, he was a Toyota dealer mechanic for many years before opening up his own shop. He knows specifically when Toyota starting using lower quality parts in what models and for what years. He does the work himself and only delegates the simple stuff like oil changes to his "apprentice". Now if I bring him a non-quality part, he just won't install it or he'll warn me of the flaws of the product vs the OEM and provide me that caveat so I would know what I am getting myself into. I'm sure he would still warranty his labor at a minimum though. It's hard to wrap your head around a mechanic like this, huh?
