seems like when you're buying used, they're expensive, and when you're selling, they've depreciated too much. hard to figure. one car is not gonna take over sales, i don't expect a major shift with the gen IV. you can't go wrong with a civic.

I would not argue with his decision to buy a Civic. I think he made a good decision. Fine car.

if not for 52 miles driven everyday, I was leaning towards Civic too.
I did need the backup camera, which was standard in civic.
In the end the year end discounts, helped me pick Prius Three.

 

I just bought my first hybrid - 2015 prius 5. I've had 4 acura TL's in a row. I've been looking at a hybrid for several years. I looked long and hard at several used prius at CarMax but they were way over-priced. So I went with new. And I am very happy!

 

There's a lot more to a hybrid than just fuel economy. It is not just an econobox exactly like a civic except with better mileage.

 

I don't know how old your nephew is - but I have a feeling the demographic under the age of 25 aren't too appreciative of owning something like a Prius. When I was 25 I wanted some style as opposed to efficiency. I got a Civic sedan.

 

I was driving our previous 06 Civic Hybrid Monday..., it really feels less "civilized", maybe because the miles are accumulating (around 170,000 km's). It's a bit noisier, the suspension coarser, the gas pedal coming off idle touchier. Maybe be the latter makes the car feel more responsive?

 

I bought a Prius for one reason only... to save gas. My other choices were a Mini Cooper or used Porsche Boxster, but only because I desired something a bit sportier and exciting. I think the reality is that people buy a Prius for two main reasons, it's economical (gas, maintenace, etc.), and it's enivronmentally friendly. People don't buy the car primarily for design, comfort, speed, handling, status, etc. And everyone is different. I don't fault your nephew for buying the Civic, good for him. Maybe when he hits 50 he might decide to consider a Prius.

Our 2006 Prius is the first car that didn't require brake work before 100,000. In fact, at 120,000 the dealership inspected the brakes and said "They look new". It was much easier purchasing the 2014 Prius after owning the 2006. It isn't as sexy as the Civic I suppose, but I couldn't imagine not having all the space for hauling stuff that we do in the Prius.

 

And that constitutes a brake inspection?

Just for starters, there are pins supporting the calipers, and allowing the calipers to shift laterally, stay centered on the disk. They've got a lubricant that can dry up, seize the caliper. Hopefully your dealership does more than just "look".

 

Your wallet will thank you the sooner you get into the hybrid.

People buy the heck they want. Based on looks, price and other factors. They trade their vehicles like changing their socks and they're careless about loosing money, and let alone saving on gas.

The civic is a great vehicle, however it's too generic for my taste, and it's on the pricey side. If going too generic, there are cheaper vehicles out there...

 

Actually, we bought our Prius primarily for comfort and cargo space. Economy and environment were factors, but lower on the list.
