Has anybody installed a Gen III gas tank in a Gen II Prius?

If you don't like the bladder in the Gen II, you can try to get a tank from Canada. I believe that the Gen II has tank from Canada doesn't have the bladder.

I'd be surprised, if the Gen III tank fit in the Gen II.

 

I believe that all North American G2 Prius have the same emissions control system including the bladder-equipped fuel tank. So the OP would have to go to another continent to find a fuel tank without bladder. The check engine light would remain on at all times since this fuel tank would not have some of the emissions components (such as the vapor sensor in the space between the bladder and the tank's rigid top) that the engine ECU expects to receive signals from.

A similar issue would result if the OP managed to get a G3 fuel tank to fit into the available G2 space.

In addition to the tank was my thought, but then I never had any problem with the bladder except driving too far.

 

Yes, the North American Gen 2 tank has a variable size, based loosely on outside temperatures. In the 3 years I owned mine I found once when it ran out of gas in 7 miles after the last pip started blinking. On other days I went over 30 miles. You just never can tell. I filled slowly and took off the cap first, so when the pump stopped, it was full.

In Mississippi in the summer that was over 10 gallons, (11 once) but in what passes for winter here, sometimes under 8 gallons.

 

i had two gen II's and never had a problem. the gauge was dead on. not sure why one thing you might consider is multiplying your average mpg's by 10 and refilling.

 

It does fill without fiddling. It is just a variable size. Seriously, it is new to you so just live with it for a bit and realize how much of a non-issue it is. The reason nobody has done it, is because nobody has a need to. The bladder works fine.

If you are constantly driving down to blinking pips, you have some sort of mind-set problem. When the car says that it is thirsty, fill it up. Don't wait for it to scream at you.

I don't think the metal housing around the fuel bladder would hold gas by itself, perhaps a related car model's tank could be improvised, if you can deal with the CEL.

 

Non North American Gen 2 Prius had a different tank with no bladder. Aside from not meeting US emissions laws, If you replaced enough of the car with a non North American donor, it should work.

WHY you would do this is not clear, but technically you could, so long as you did not drive it on public highways in the US.

 

why you would do it is because the bladder was a bad idea, and in some states there is no emissions inspection on the prius, so if you did go through all the trouble to replace the bladder tank with a better EU tank, no one would know or be able to stop you.
and the relatively small amount of emissions leaking from a prius tank is nothing compared to all the other pollution going on all around us 24/7.

 

I didn't realize you just recently bought this Prius. It could be "folded" or have some other minor ailment causing you to not get a good fill. Mine has been spot on since I expanded it 3 years ago. Now everytime I fill up, I get 10-ish gallons in there right around the blinky pip which is about 2gallons remaining on a healthy bladder.

It is explained on here somewhere, but basically fill and then let it bloat outwards from the internal stresses. Then fill more, and repeat until completely full. I did it long ago by squeezing the pump nozzle so that it barely was flowing out and just continued until the pump shut it off. Then I took the pump head out of the tank a bit so there was an air-gap (yay fumes!) and just trickled it in until I saw the liquid petrol build up. Then it bubbled and sucked in. Did that a couple times until the bubble didn't come, and voila.

The danger is that if you overfill too much and get fuel outside the bladder area, you can do damage. Not guaranteed, and I am sure I got some down there, but if you are careful not to flood it, you are probably OK for a one time short application.

 

This is meant as an observation "from a long distance" not a criticism. I wonder how much emissions the bladder tank has saved against the number of reports of the bladder belching out fuel negating those savings. Even 1 gallon of loss is a lot of vapor. Also the more frequent filling must add more vapor to the atmosphere.
