ABS acuatator problem

    I live in Islamabad, Pakistan. Six months back I purchased prius 2008 and it was working perfectly fine until last week when during driving all of sudden ABS, Brake and parking lights were illuminated. I took the car to Toyota dealer and they detected problem in RL C1344. They cleared the code through scan and had test drive and everything working well until warning lights returned couple days later. I again went to the dealer and they said you need to change the hub assembly but I instead resurfaced the rotors yet the warning lights remain. And during my third visit to the Toyota dealer, when they checked pressure of the rear brakes by pressing the brake padel, they realized that RL brake was not responding. Then they checked the line, it was also fine and finally they checked ABS actuator and according to the dealer it needs to be replaced. But another non-dealer guy told me that the problem is not that huge and it would be sorted out without replacing the ABS actuator. But I am really in a fix what to do. Can anybody help me out how to proceed?

    Resurfacing the rotors has nothing to do with the hub assembly. You do not say which hub assembly needed replacing "front or rear"? The rear bearing hub assembly has the ABS sensor built in. So if the sensor is faulty on the rear the hub must be replaced as a complete unit. If it is a front ABS sensor that is faulty these can be unbolted from the front hub and replaced as a separate item.

    Thanks for your response. I went to another Toyota dealer and they rectified the problem by clearing codes through scan and bleeding air. So far it is working fine but the guy at workshop told me if ABS, brake warning lights return than you have to replace the ABS actuator.

    I also bought 2007 Prius 2 months ago and during driving all of sudden ABS, Brake and parking lights were illuminated. Code was C1343. I went to local mechanic and they bleeded all the brakes and found that there is no bleed pressure in right rear brake, they told me to Replace ABS ( Brake Actuator, Used Brake Actuator Part Cost $150 and $30 labour for installation. Can anybody help me out that should i replace part or is there any other way to fix existing part.

    Does your Mechanic have the Toyota Techstream equipment as without this there will be no pressure at the rear brakes. The Prius brakes cannot be bled in the same way as other cars. Opening the bleed valves and pushing the brake pedal will not work.

    No, He bled the brakes normal way, he told me to push brake paddle many times and hold it. After bleeding brakes when i started to drive the car the brake was not working and paddle was very stiff, the car beeped for a while and after 3-4 min the pressure was automatically made by brakes and car stopped beeping. Brakes are working fine now except Rear Right brake and the code C1343 is still there after resetting many times.

    As I said in my answer before you cannot do this with the Prius. You need to purchase a Mini VCI with Techstream from ebay they are very cheap. You will need an old Windows XP laptop (this is the easiest to load the program). This has the required program for bleeding the brakes and clearing the codes. It does everything on the Prius that the dealer equipment does, and will work on all Toyota's.

    Thanks John, my friend is coming from UK in two weeks i will ask him to get mini vci with techstream for me, i got an old laptop with windows xp. Once again thaks for your help.

    No problem. When you connect the mini vci to the OBD port and start Techstream go to the section on brakes, and there is a walk through on what to do.

    I tried bleeding this way and it wouldnt stay .. broke out the mity vac and i aint lookin back !!!

    did u miss a zero .. i'd gladly pay $30 labor many times for installation .. i think u meant THREE Hundred $$$ labor for install of the ABS actuator (and does this include bleeding and ABS bleeding ? )

    The used Japanese parts for Prius and labor are cheap here in Islamabad. You can replace the whole ABS brake actuator part with brake fluid change and installation within $300. That is why we replace parts here instead of knocking our heads to the wall. Lol
