I need a new 12v battery for my Prius can I buy one from o'reillys for $197 or do I have to get the $400 one from the Toyota dealership as they told me . Will this affect the warranty on the vehicle if I put it in myself?

You can get one from Oreillys, installation is pretty simple. Just curious how your 12v failed? They normally go about 5 years or more.

I also think it shouldn't be much more than $200 at the Toyota parts counter, it's only $400 at their service dept.

Thanx for your reply. Over the last month the car has not started a few times Eventually, after some coaxing it would, but we finally took it in. The serviceman replaced the battery in one fob, but the next day it was dead. No light at all on ignition switch though it did periodically beep. We towed it in and they were going to charge overnite to check battery. He said the lights were in on position which drained the battery. However when we lock the car, all lights go out. Who is right? It is frustrating to have a two year old car that won't turn on. I've had a few Toyotas before and NEVER had any reliability issues.

I would think if it's under 3 years / 36k miles, it would be under warranty. If you've exceeded 36k miles, I guess you'll just have to buy another battery.

These batteries are not really good after a deep discharge. So if you've discharged it, it could go bad.

We'll see tomorrow, but will my installment effect the rest of the car warranty (hybrid battery, etc) Also, is the Toyota battery better than O'reillys ?

If you can buy OEM battery for similar price to Oreillys, I would buy the OEM. They seem to be the more superior of the batteries available for the Prius.

Did you install any aftermarket stereo or alarm system? Maybe it is draining your battery, in the case. Maybe your warranty got void

No no extra anything. Not clear why the battery died.

installing it yourself will not affect your warranty. neither will using an aftermarket battery. you should test your battery with a voltmeter. also, you can buy a yuasa oem from a toyota dealership for $200.

I asked in the parts dept. at Toyota, $368 for a new 12vO'Reilly's was $197 which is what I went with. As you said installation was easy, fingers crossed it does the trick. Thanks for all your help.

I just had one installed by the dealer for $259.00. Mine lasted from May 2011 to November 2014.

I just phone a couple of dealership parts departments about replacement 12 volt, in the last 6 months. The nearby one said something like $230, and the one further down the road, that invariably has better parts prices, said something like $210~. That's in Canada, traditionally the home of inflated prices.

You're entitled to install yourself, it's pretty easy, if you've done before, and using stock battery for replacement, should be no suprises.

(Of course a traditional lead/acid battery purchased recently at a Honda dealership was $135)

Nine "D" cells wired together should do it. All it needs to do is turn on the computer.

But I joke. Seriously, there's no need to spend a lot of money on a 12V battery for the Prius unless you expect it to go dead, and don't want it damaged as a result. It doesn't crank the engine, so there's no reason to pay a lot of money for capacities that have no value in a Prius.
