Come on y'all... Thanksgiving is a United States of America Holiday...

Where we give thanks for what we have and rejoice in the companionship of our neighbors...

Black Friday was to make you get off your butt in the States and get the presents you needed to give on the day we celebrate the birth of the Christ (even though he was born in September) for 10 - 75% off...

Where on earth does it say Brits get to play???

    Just saying...

Once again, America's vices spread faster than its virtues.

    GOOD!

It will not adequately repay them for poisoning our schoolyards with soccer pitches, but it's a proper start! ;)

Yeah thanks for sending this crap idea our way guys (n)

We really need a nonsense 'sale' a month before Christmas, or is it just a cynical marketing ploy? It's just the US owned companies who started it and one or two others have copied but I doubt it'll be the big think it is in the US because we obviously don't have ThanksGiving - yet lol.

Sales used to be at the end of January, then at the end of the year, then just after Christmas, then Christmas Eve and now a month before. Smacks of desperation by the shops to me. A lot of the shops grumble that they are losing sales over the winter period but Mrs Cabbie summed it up the other day generally as follows; "the UK is a cold country, yet the shops only sell winter clothes from October to December and then sell summer clothes for the remaining 10 months." I'm sure that works in Florida or Australia but it's bloody freezing here for 6 months of the year and we get our coldest weather in January and February. Surely they should sell warm clothes for 6 months or at least over the coldest period? Or am I missing some marketing ploy here? Or are they just using the same marketing plan they use in the US or Spain?

But back to topic. You guys can keep Black Friday. Load of nonsense and a scam.

    Ummm...... Yeah.

My Mum and Dad told me about this.

I'm reasonably cool with Halloween becoming Americanised. The kids like it. And ghosts are ghosts: they can travel round the world (just ask my friend who saw a ghost on a Cathay Pacific A330 - I can tell you about it if you like). The American Halloween is an interpretation and exaggeration of a mainly-Irish festival. So that's OK.

But .... Thanksgiving? The whole point of Thanksgiving is, very specifically, that you're not British. What on earth are the British doing joining in? "Yay! Everyone ran away to do religious oppression and then fight a war against us! Let's go shopping!"

    It's bizarre.

I think it's worth emphasising this point. The Americans need to recognise that they're wrong. They've been vandalising our language for too long. It antagonises me so much I struggle to cope: I've tried - I even worked in an American company - but I can't acclimatise to their spelling. I wish they could recognise that we speak proper English, and customise the spellings in their posts for us accordingly.

I really get quite demoralised about it: I don't want to politicise this issue, but I think it's clear that the Americans are wrong and we're right. I know there are historical reasons for the changes, but I can't empathise with this need to spell things with zeds all over the place.

This might be a polarising statement, but I think this epitomises everything that's wrong with America. We need to harmonise global English, and find a way to effectively immunise it from American influence. Maybe we should hypnotise them into spelling properly, or maybe we could bribe them: if we could somehow monetise correct English spelling in a way that would incentivise Americans to use an "s" where appropriate, we could effectively delegimitise the use of zees in America. I don't want to generalise, but I think "spelling things like they're said" infantilises the language by pidginising it.

I hope this has galvanised IanIanIanIan, GrumpyCabbie, ftl, and the others who know how to spell, and that we can work together to organise an optimised way to proselytise about proper English usage and stigmatise the zees, so that we can properly anglicise the Americans.

I rather thought that the whole point of being American was to get away from "proper English."

I do wish that I were here, though.....

Walmart at Asda started it. Cynical, nasty American company. Asda have gone down hill since they took over. They're cheap and probably nicer than Tesco but our local Asda just seems to be a haunt for the erm, less desirables of society.

Wish it would go away just like the Americanism of Halloween has. A few years ago everyone seemed to dress up to the excess of our American friends, but this has become less the last couple years. It's a load of humbug lol. What was wrong with burning a Catholic on Bonfire night that's what I want to know lol :sneaky:
