I have recently experienced a great loss of oil. I have noticed a rapid decrease in average gas mileage down to low 30's. Upon checking the oil I was down 3 quarts. The is no visible leakage and no smoke exhaust or odor. dealer has no answer except to do an oil consumption test? Help

Down 3 quarts is pretty severe. I wouldnt do the consumption test, it's you paying them to tell you what you already know.

Just keep an eye on the oil level and add as needed. I would check the oil level at every fillup at this point

Every fill-up, that could be serious miles. Every day. Keep records.

What year model is it? Has it been used in harsh conditions? We really need more info.

Were you level on the ground when you check your level, who changed your oil last?. I doubt you can loose that much of oil by the engine consumption w/o blowing a lot of smoke out of your tailpipe. Since our undercarriage is closed with plastic and sponge like substance and identifying leaks visually is very hard i suggest you go under and check the oil filter housing/drain plug and the insulating material for oil or dampness that is covering in the service hatch (ie your access hatch for your oil filter and drain plug)

I'm not surprised that the OP is burning a significant amount of oil. There has been many reports of GenIII cars burning oil, and mine does it as well. I was able to slow it down by switching from Mobil 1 to Pennzoil platinum oil. Not sure why the engine burns the oil but it just does.

I'm also adding oil but don't have any performance or fuel economy loss. I agree with Mike. It's time to check the oil regularly & keep track of the usage.

So you routinely rev the engine over 4000 RPM. Such as high speed or many hills. I find that my car will burn some oil if I do this.

I have a 2010 prius it burns oil since I got it with 43k. Roughly 1/2 quart to 3/4 in between oil changes. I change it at 8k intervals. Its driven hard as well. I've tried using Toyota synthetic oil, currently using Mobil one advanced fuel economy. I'm going to try the Pennzoil platinum. I have a 05 Prius never burned oil until one time I used 0w20 oil in it after that it started burning, maybe coincidence but i'm not complaining that was at 150k. The 05 still chugging along with 200k. The 05 uses 0w30 AFE mobil 1 with 5k intervals.

I found it clogged my cat converter, the back pressure lowered my mpg at freeway speeds. When a crack developed in exaust manifold power returned. I'm gonna keep adding oil till I get to 400,000 miles then replace engine and exaust Cat converter.

When I originally went to the dealer in AZ, they opened the hood and there was coolant all over. They replaced the water by-pass hose which was broken. I drove home from Scottsdale AZ today. After driving 160 miles, I filled up, checked oil level and did not have to add. I then drove the additional 238 miles home. Averaged 45.2 MPG at an average speed of 64 MPH. Still no need to add oil. Hope this was the answer to the problem.
