    I could use some help.

My 2008 Prius was in an accident and both right side doors were replaced. The non-JBL systems worked fine before the doors were replaced. Now the right channel is very low volume. It is only audible when the fader is set all the way to the right and volume us at max. Even then barely any sound comes out. The Left side works fine. Since I do hear some audio and both front and rear speakers behave the same. My assumption is the wiring and speakers are OK. Any suggestion on what to check ? Is there anyway to verify if the head unit is bad? All suggestions are welcome

One thought, If the replacement doors were from a car with JBL speakers and my car is non-JBL. Could that be the cause of low volume? The non-JBL head unit is not capable of driving JBL speakers.

the jbl speakers are lower resistance; I'd expect them to be louder. I would want to check the wiring through the door jam into the door to verify it was done right. body shops tend to do shoddy work even if they paint well. they may have butchered your wiring or the speakers.

Visit an audio shop. They should be able to diagnose the problem in a matter of a few minutes and at minimal cost........IF they are competent.

FIXING the problem might be a bit more difficult, depending on what the problem IS.

Another bit of information if it helps, When the fader is all the way to the right there is sound coming from the tweeter but no sound from either speakers in the door. Any suggestion on where to look next.

Probably woofer speaker wires are disconnected at some point. Maybe at speaker? Or where wires go to door or either side of that?

Well if you really INSIST on trying to fix this yourself.......yes, the wiring would be the next thing to check.
Disconnected or possibly pinched on something and shorted.

Is there some reason that you do not want to take it back to the place that did the previous work ???

I’m just giving advice because OP asked. If it can be taken back to whoever did the work originally then I would just think that OP would have already done that.

Thanks for the advice,. I have already brought the car back twice. The body shop insist the right side was out before the accident and it is no not their fault. They will not work on it any longer.

I did pull the door panel to look for broken wires and did not see anything damaged. Since both right side speakers are out and not the tweeter. Is there place where the speaker wiring splits off to front and back doors? Also I noticed the door wiring harness for JBL is different part number than JBL system. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for both JBL and non JBl To compare.

Wiring doesn’t separate into front and back doors. Bought front and back speakers are connected to amp separately (otherwise fader wouldn’t work).

so there are separate wires that route from the back of the radio to each speaker through the connectors since there is no dedicated AMP in my system.

Yes. There is amp in the head unit so technically my post was correct.

Looking from wiring manual it appears that jbl amplifier has separate output for tweeter and woofer. Right woofer connects to front door by pins 5 and 8 and tweeter by pins 1 and 2. Regular version has only one pair of wires going into door and they are connected to pins 1 and 2. So what your front door is no doing is directly what is caused if you install jbl door to non-jbl car.

Rears should work so either they messed something up or something is broken.

But fixing that front door is somewhat problematic. Because you could just connect wires from tweeter to woofer but then you don’t have tweeter anymore. And I think jbl speakers are 2-ohm and non jbl 4-ohm so head unit amp is overloaded if you do this.

You should really just make that shop put non jbl door/speakers in…

Vald3 thank you very much, I verified the wiring issue with the front as you describe by jumping from the connector block pins 1, 2 directly to the woofer. The woofer is now full volume. For a permanent fix is it possible to re-order the pins in the fe-male connector. Move pins 5 and 8 to pins 1 and 2. That would drive the woofer. ( Do i need a special tool to remove the pins)
How is the tweeter driven in normal or non-jbl mode.
Once the front is straightened out I will move on to the back. It turns out shop did swap in my non JBL speakers at least in the front.

Are you sure they swapped in your woofer speakers? Because if they did they would probably also swapped in our old tweeter and crossover and then it would have already worked. If they didn’t you shouldn’t do what you just did. Your stereo head unit may break!

You can test this with multimeter non jbl is about 4ohm and jbl is 2 ohm. You can’t know overloading by sound you will only notice it when sound stops. And then it may be too late.

And now why know that problem wasn’t with the car before it did get to that shop. But they caused it. And it is pretty easy to explain them how. Jbl and non jbl speakers and wiring is not the same. So you should just get it back to them so that they would fix it. And only correct fix is to install non jbl woofer, tweeter, (I think crossover is integrated into tweeter) and wiring harness.

Cause of this thing I always do everything that I can myself because you will spend more time fixing other peoples faults than just fixing it yourself. But you should get them fix it because fixing it yourself will use money and you used it already by hiring shop to do it.

The front door definitely has standard woofer in the door and std tweeter. No sign of JBL logo anywhere. I am not sure about the cross over. I am not sure what it looks like

Are you sure they didn’t only swap the part with the logo? JBL model has crossover non jbl doesn’t. It’s probably integrated to tweeter.

Maybe they swapped the tweeter cause that’s easy. But I highly doubt that they replaced woofer because that requires drilling and pop riveting. And I don’t think that JBL woofer has jbl logo anywhere.

You can check it with multimeter like I said earlier. But why don’t you just bring it to the shop and have them fix it by installing correct speakers and wiring harness?

the jbl woofer has red surround, no markings visible to indicate its jbl. the base woofer has no red on it. the cross over for the base tweeter is just a capacitor soldered on to the tweeter. make sure to wire the tweeter and woofer in parallel in a base system and it will work as intended.

valde, that body shop is full of idiots that have already refused to fix their mistakes. if they did work on it more, what else do you suppose they will break? perhaps finns are all decent honorable people, but America is full of useless, worthless scum that won't do anything except the barest minimum to get by. if they screw anything up, and you try to make them fix it, they'll only make it worse. they don't care and the law is on their side.

best solution, and as we say in usa "if you want anything done right, you have to do it yourself". unfortunately, this is sad but true.

Agree 100% with Shovlhed. The bodyshop is full of idiots and I gave up working with them.
As an update, The body shop did in fact replace the JBL speakers out of both front and rear doors with factory non-JBL
Once I understood how the car was wired I spent a couple of hours yesterday wiring both the front and rear speakers. The front speaker problem was as described above, non-jbl wiring drives pin 1,2 and JBL wiring drives 1,2 ( tweeter) and 5,8 ( woofer). I wired 1,2 directly to the woofer. The rear speaker had a similar problem wiring for the tweeter was driven and woofer was not .

After the re-wire all is good. And I did not have to deal with the body shop again.

A Big THANK YOU to all that helped out.
