Trunk opening question

    Hello everyone. I purchased a 2011 Prius II for my brother. Car has 47,000 miles, purchased new in June 2011, does have aftermarket NAV. It's in perfect condition, and I thought that the price of $14,000 was a very good deal.

    I could not get the hatch to open without either unlocking with the key fob, or opening the driver's door first. The materials said that the switch on the hatch has a rectangular part to the left that unlocks the hatch when touched, and a button to the right to lock the hatch and the doors. When I looked at it there was no button.

    What's the story? Is there a way to set it up so the hatch can be opened without using the key fob? The materials appear to suggest that it should work this way.

    Otherwise this is a perfect car for my brother. He lives just outside of NYC and commutes into the city daily in traffic that is slow in the morning and slower in the evening.

    Prius 2 only has sks on drivers door, not on trunk or passenger door

    you can add the antenna and change the switch. it's a big job though. when you think about it, how often do you open the hatch?

    The rectangular "button" is just a raised area on the rubber. You have to press it in as it's a mechanical switch. The car must not be locked if you don't have SKS on the hatch (you probably don't). The FOB will unlock the hatch but you still have to press in the rectangular area to activate the switch. As I recall, two presses on the FOB unlock all doors.

    yeah, it would be funny if toyota made a car with a hatch that wouldn't open.

    I believe post #5 "David Beale" pretty much sums it all up. Model 2 did not come with the smart key system (SKS). Therefore in order to open the hatch the doors MUST be unlocked FIRST with the fob.

    The 2011 Two came with smart key system, although it functions only on the driver's door. In order to open the hatch, the doors must (all) be unlocked first with the fob OR by pressing the rocker switch on the driver's armrest that locks and unlocks the doors.

    In post #8 above, I should've also mentioned that the owner's manual says you can change a preference setting so that all doors, including the hatch, will unlock when you touch the driver's outside release handle. I haven't tried that yet.
