I get a knock noise, actually more of a crack sound, when going over a bump with front nearside wheel. It sounds like it’s coming from behind and on a level with the glove compartment. I have checked suspension and steering components (including strut top nuts) which seems good and emptied junk out of glove compartment but noise persists. Any ideas?

Check your cabin air filter, which is behind the glove compartment. Maybe you have some leaves/rock in there.

Had a good feel around the bulkhead and A/C compartment, checked A/C filter (just a bit of light dust) and all seems fine.
    Thanks for your suggestions though.

I have had a knock on my UK Prius for the last 4 years. It appears to come from the same area as yours and appears mostly at low speed (below 30 mph) on slightly uneven surfaces (not bumpy or ruff). The noise has not got any worse over time.
I have had a microphone attached to all the likely places, but I cannot trace it. I strongly suspect it is the top transmission mounting as there was a revised mounting produced by Toyota to cure such a knock that consisted of the original mount with a strip of extra insulation material fitted in the mounting. I have been struggling to get to the mounting to attach the microphone there being no room to get my large hands in a suitable position.
If you wish to apply the same method of tracing noises use a small mike or even old bud type earphones will do plugged into the radio aux port. Hold the mike in place with a crocodile clip such as those used on small battery chargers. Turn the radio to AUX and the volume on full.

Found the TSB on the knocking noise.

great link bp! might be the culprit. funny, looks like no one wanted to spend the money, or take the time to repair.

you need a garage, think how much more productive you would be.:)

Weather permitting I intend lifting the inverter and adding a piece of insulation to see if it cures the problem. All it will cost is time, but the weather is against me at the moment. Minus 8c here last knight and minus 3c all day today. Wind chill factor to be added.

Unfortunately I live in a 16th century cottage, and although I own it I am not allowed to modify the property in any way as it is "grade 2" listed, and in a conservation area. This means to put up new buildings or make modifications I have to get permission from "English heritage" and the local council. The answer from both is a definite no!!!
I also would not change where I live.

sounds perfect. seems like horse stalls would be appropriate. they must have really built them right to last that long. i used to live in dedham, ma, oldest frame house in the u.s., not livable unfortunately. i suppose stone would be better.

The timbers in the cottage were cut some 400 years before it was built and came from a now derelict castle (Wigmore castle) about 1/4 of a mile away.
Apologies afraid we are straying off the topic here somewhat.

Excellent post John, I think you may well have pinpointed it. Just knowing what and where it is makes it less annoying and worrying. I’ll have a closer look in summer, maybe it’s possible to tap a bit of rubber strip, or something, in there without having to dissemble it. Thank you very much for the info.
