I bought a certified pre-owned 2013 Prius II the other day and I notice it has no floor mats. None in the front. Even the two in the back are gone. The car is only 2 years old, so I wonder why the original owner would have kept them. Was this a dealership trick I didn't notice? Could they still be at the dealership when they cleaned out the car and they simply forgot to put them back in? If the same thing has happened to someone you know, I'd appreciate your response.

Floor mats are a distributor "add on" option. Southeast Toyota does that for all of their Prius models.

The original owner might have has expensive floor liners, bought an upgraded Gen III Prius and decided to keep them for the new car. He would have already sold the original distributor "add on" floor mats by then.

They might have also been tossed, because they were trashed, and the car is more presentable without them.

From all the people listing floor mats in the "private sales" section, I would say most have been taken out by the original owner. If they were dirty, the dealership would have just cleaned them up when they detail them for sale.

I purchased a cpo prius 4 yrs ago and it came with mats, just traded that one in for another cpo Prius that didn't come with mats. My salesman told me to take out my mats from my trade since they just toss all mats in used cars. So it might depend on the dealer or like they said if the people traded it in with them or not.

Yes, we should make it clear that floor mats are not standard factory equipment. They are an (almost mandatory) 'option', at extra cost. Some buyers may be able to negotiate away the cost and get them free, some others might negotiate them away entirely, with the dealer pulling them out before delivery.

While some may be cleanable, some may not. I had great difficulty removing a giant oily blob of chewing gum tracked in by an oil change tech.

Floormats are no longer a "given" with a new car or a newer used car.

So I mean I don't think it was a "trick" of the dealer.

Before you sign on the dotted line, you have a lot of leverage, or dealers will often "sweeten" the deal by "throwing in" floormats. You could call and ask, or just politely state you assumed floormats would be included, and maybe they will be nice?

But it just could very much be that the floormats if they ever existed, weren't traded in with the vehicle. And dealers don't automatically provide them anymore.

I probably would call and ask. Nothing to lose.

Yes, when I bought my Prius, I got all of the "cheesy" $1,000 retail add-ons for FREE.

to be honest, you are better off getting some nice aftermarket rubber mats/liners. I had my carpet floor mats that came with the car and kept them underneath my heavyduty mats. but in order for it to be snug and locked into place, i needed the carpet floor mats to be removed.

My factory mats for my 2010 P2 are in the "rear under floor" package tray. It rattle proofs things and keeps them with the car. In their place are 4 plastic / rubber weather mats to catch bad weather trash from dirty shoes/ overshoes.
