As I mentioned in another running thread, my daughter's 2004 Prius is at a dealer getting structural repair work done after running over a road median.

I authorized the repair work today, and three times told the service advisor that I did not want the three outstanding recalls performed*. At the advisor's behest I sent them an email confirming that I decline the recall work.

Now the dealership notifies me that they have done the warranty work already. Perhaps I should not be surprised at their actions; they pad the bill, regardless of whether it is Toyota or the customer. I'm just surprised at the hutzpah: By their story they did the recall work even before I authorized the structural repair work.

They better not charge Toyota, that is all I can say.

*The inverter coolant pump I already changed myself, and the idiotic floor mat recalls.

Yup, they just bill Toyota. I too refused the recall for the floor mats and shaving of the pedal. Just media appeasing, since it wasn't a problem in the first place if you aren't an idiot. When I went in for the coolant pump change they wanted to do it, but I refused and the dealership made me sign some stupid waiver that meant nothing.

Dealers are sleezy, can't wait for the Tesla model to become the norm.

I don't think you can get away with not doing safety recalls. Once the car is in their hands, they do it. You can avoid them by not bringing the car in.

Or as 2k1 stated, sign a waiver....but that's unusual they even do that, for safety reasons

One more reason to avoid dealerships.

I've been avoiding the recall on my 2010. So that car hasn't seen the dealer since the recall's been out.

Actually if you signed a waiver, the recall does not go away. They just remind you again the next time you are in the dealer. It still shows in their systems as an outstanding recall.

I can understand not shaving the gas pedal unless you are one of the idiots that likes a stack of loose floor mats underfoot, but why would you decline the steering shaft and inverter pump?

Why would you not want to do a recall? Toyota pays for it. Also does anyone know if there were any recalls for the 2006 prius

I don't understand how they padded the bill doing recall work. I wasn't charged anything for recall work.

The padded bill is the one going back to Toyota corporate.

When my incident happened (not with a Toyota), there wasn't much time to think. My accelerator got stuck full-down in very tight traffic. All I could manage to do was lay on the brake-pedal with all my might until the computer decided to kill the engine. I suppose my second reaction might have been to turn off the ignition, but it was such a sudden and intense circumstance, that I didn't consider a second reaction. It turned out to be the pedal jammed down by a floor-mat in my case.

There's no padding the bill as its a fixed charge to perform the recalls. Why would you not want them to do the recalls? You will never notice they did anything. If fact the pedal shave is an excellent and common sense idea as the pedal is rather long and many things could get stuck under it. Your phone ...anything. Especially if you have kids. I have dropped my phone on the floor a few times. They shaved my pedal and my foot is still way up on it.

And if anything every happened and you refused the recalls guess who's the idiot then?

And its important to know and be comfortable with putting your cars in neutral at any given time. Its really quick and easy in a Prius.
Practice it. I do to clean my brakes quite often.

The only time I use neutral is in the car-wash, where it's required.
