Part of my purchase this week of a 2015 Prius v Wagon Five w/ATP was a 50% discount coupon (up to $200 off) at my dealer for parts, service, or accessories. My Prius is pretty well equipped as delivered with most everything I would want included. They also included the rubber front/rear/cargo Prius floor mats.

The only thing I can see in the accessories page of the brochure that I would possibly care for are mud flaps... and I am not even sure that I want those.

I asked the dealer how much it would be for a new key fob with programming and mechanical key cutting and I was quoted an outrageous $410. I guess I could use the $200 discount to get it down to an expensive $210... but I probably would not get a dealer to offer one less expensive. We generally like to get an extra smart key for our cars just to have in case of emergency.

Any ideas on anything else I should consider that I haven't thought of? How would you use this?

    /Jim

Would you be able to use that coupon for window tinting?
Or perhaps a clear bra installation?

When I bought my Honda, the dealership installed a 3M clear bra, it was pretty nice. Kept the front end from picking up chips.

But really it's up to you.

+1 on tint if they allow it...

I presume your new car already has the remote starter right? If not that would be a good choice.

Maybe TRD sway bar or TRD lowering springs if you want better and slightly stiffer handling characteristics.

Bike rack / roof rack / hitch??

    Some ideas....

These are all personal choices, but I am not keen on tinted windows or clear bra. Chips and door strike dings happen with or without a bra. I've jokingly made a comment that I might just bang a shopping cart into my new car to proactively pre-dispose any first ding anxiety.

I really like the idea on remote starter. One downside is that it would remove the motivation for my wife to clean out the garage making room for my new Prius (just kidding). Seriously... we have a 4 car garage (two wide/two deep)... and she has so much crap out there that only her BMW Z4 fits inside. I told her if she doesn't get her act together... I'm moving the Z4 out onto the street. Somehow, I do not think I am going to win this argument.

I do not see the MSRP on the starter. I *THINK* it is about $500. This would bring it down to $300. Not bad on chilly mornings if she doesn't clean the garage.

Sounds like you are well off enough to really not get too bothered about saving "$200". You can get some heavier duty floor mats for the wet months in OR. Don't go looking to buy something you don't need for $400 just to save $200.

when you say 'an extra smart key', you already have two, correct?

My car already came with the thick OEM rubber floor mats (not the carpeted ones) as well as the rubber cargo area. I think I am all set.

Yes, the car came with two smart keys. We have two primary drivers (my wife and myself)... but we do like to have an extra key in the house in case we are both gone and someone needs to use the car.

We generally buy one extra key... but at $410, I am starting to question that decision. $210 is not as bad.

I have decided against the remote-start. I just need my wife to empty all of her crap out of my side of the garage. I think I'll just order up a commercial class waste container and start pitching stuff.

Or you can buy some nice tires (like Michelin tires) and sell off the inferior ones that came with the car. Should be a break even swap if you take advantage of the $200

^^^ a set of winter tires or even an extra set of good LRR tires for when the stockers wear down is a splendid idea.

What are LRR tires? I even looked in the glossary and couldn't find the term.

I generally keep two sets of tires... summer and studded snow tires. We drive over the Oregon Coast Range very often (~ 3 round trips per month) and I like to be prepared. We do not get a lot of snow in Portland... but we do get the occasional ice storm. Black ice can be especially common driving over the coast range.

Having studded tires is a bit of a pain, especially if we take a winter trip up to Canada where studded snow tires are banned. We end up having to switch tires just for the trip. I might look at stud-less ice tires this time around. Some say they are as good as studs (or even better). Certainly they are better for the roads. I'll do some research before next winter. We had zero snow this year... I think we sent it all to New England. ;)

Here in the PNW... I like to buy my tires from Les Schwab because they are the epitome of excellent customer service. I just feel that such companies need to be rewarded with my business.

I think I've decided to go with the 3rd SKS key fob. I feel better having an extra key in reserve.

    Thanks for the tips!

Ok. Get your $400 key. Lol.

    LRR = low rolling resistance.

Thanks... I'll look at those when the OEM tires wear out in a couple of years.

I presume your new Prius has LRR tires already as OEM. Might be worth checking.

My point was that you could buy a whole set as backup to have on hand (not sure when your certificate expires)

But your getting the key so disregard.

I'm 99.9% sure that I would be buying a 3rd key anyway. We have for every other car we own... except for the Z4 which the kids are prohibited from driving.

At $410... it is close to the optimal savings for the $200 certificate. Thanks for the help!

I wish my dealership offered the same half off coupon. They did not :(

I'd be tossed up between the TRD springs and the remote starter.

Probably would end up with the remote starter though.

The coupon was actually offered by Costco for going through the Costco car purchase plan. Supposedly, it is a no-haggle fleet type of purchase program at good pre-negotiated rates with specific car dealers. It ended up that another program through my work had a lower pre-negotiated price from a different dealer which was a bit less expensive... so they matched that lower price.

Hence... the coupon is actually from Costco... but it must be used at the same dealer where I purchased the car.

Well then that worked out pretty darn good for ya Jim. They matched the lower price and you still get to use costco's coupon. :)

Better just leave her BMW alone or you will get in deep trouble.
