My feelings about the backup beeper and turning it off

Hey, I'm perfectly capable of doing stupid things in my sixties. If there's a safety measure that's not super obnoxious, just lasts a few seconds, and just might save my bacon, I'm all for it. I believe Toyota put in the interior beep when reversing due to their unorthodox shifter.

Yes that's precisely the point of it. There's no "feel" to the shifter so the beep is there to help prevent you from flooring it and reversing through the back of your garage or into the car parked behind you.

I always wondered why people would want this safety feature removed? Doesn't really make any sense to do so and I agree with above post.

I mean honestly, even if you have a huge driveway that you have to for some reason back up to get out of, what's that like 5-10 seconds of beeping max?

Almost as bad as some folks that want that "annoying beep" turned off that's telling you to buckle up.

A bit off-topic, but hey: anyone else keeping score when watching recent movies (or tv series): how many foks in cars are buckling up? Maybe it's cinematic license, seatbelts get in the way, but a lot of times the belts are outa the way, celluloid heroes never die, I guess.

We were watching "Wild" the other night: Reese Witherspoon hitches a ride, neither she 'nor the driver are belted up. Same thing for a lotta Scandinavian police procedural series we've been watching, seat belts rarely if ever seen, everybody on their cell phones, and smoking up a storm.

There seems to be a resurgence of smoking in Hollywood's offerings of late too: a joint product placement by the tobacco industry?

I agree with the OP to the extent that I often feel the venomous hatred of the reverse beep is severely out of proportion in relationship to the reality for which it is...

I actually kind of like it...it reminds me to be careful...and I don't do a lot of driving around in reverse, so the few seconds that I am usually in reverse? I can surely stand it's repetitive beep.

But I'm in the minority. Most people it seems are thrilled, focused, aimed at turning it off.

    Re: reverse beeper
The 'disable' option from Toyota does not fully remove it, just shortens it to a single beep.
If you believe 10 seconds is huge, then mine is ginormous. While it is only 150 feet until I can turn around in either neighbor's parking area (if partially unoccupied), the path is narrow and lined with trees and shrubs, demanding slow speeds. A continuous beeper tends to mask the neighbors' screams of terror as I bear down on them.

A lot of them also want to: lower the suspension, replace the rims, strip off the badges, replace the lights, disable the "Jetsons" speaker, add illuminated door sills, plasti-dip the badges they couldn't pry off, and on and on. :ROFLMAO:

Fuzzy1 - Back into your ginormous driveway when you get home, that way no beep when you leave for work / Errands, etc…

One less thing to annoy you before you have a cup of joe and start the day… ;)

I'm often impressed at many of the modifications people do to their vehicles, and The Prius.

I can appreciate it, even if it is something I don't want or wouldn't do.

I think I like to do "something" to every vehicle I have owned that makes it uniquely mine. Even if is something as subtle as a name on the bumper, or something tastefully added to the interior.

In this case it is probably an aging fact. If you start having many accidents it is time to hang up your drivers license. In my subjective opinion the type of shift that Toyota has is the best in the business. I believe that GM now in charge by the government is not happy that Toyota is number one in sales and the tremendous popularity of the Prius is not helping matters. They are nit picking Toyota faults. Why is Toyota number one in sales is because you get quality and reliability for your money. Although GM is improving their quality and reliability ( Forced by the Japanese auto manufacturers to do so) they have a long way to catch up to Toyota. More and more intelligent people know Toyota is the best way to go. Instead of getting your information from 6 year old oriented commercials use web pages that display faults in cars. The information you will get is that GM has 10 times as many faults as the Japanese cars. What I surmise is that most Americans don't know that Chevrolet is made in Canada and some of the Japanese cars are made in the US. Unfortunately, some of Toyota's commercials, especially trucks are also 6 year old oriented.

Nah, everyone has lapses, at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. The best engineering takes this into consideration. Case in point: it's very easy to forget to put in the cartridge style oil filter, after doing an oil change. There's a member here who had the pros doing his oil changes, and the first time he opened it, his first DIY change, there was no filter in there.

That's due in part to an engineering deficiency, if it's possible, stupid stuff will happen, sooner or later. If they'd designed the filter housing so it's impossible to reinstall without a filter, problem solved.

If the law was not to buckle up I would break the law and buckle up. You are going down the highway at 65 mph. You round the curve in the highway and suddenly you realize the traffic is dead stopped. The results is your car stops on a dime and gets 9 cents back in change. You still do 65 mph. What happens is your head goes through the wind shield and the hole your head makes is enlarged. Once your energy of 65 mph is dissipated the hole in the wind shield contracts and your head is decapitated. Amen.

Yeah I've had my share. There was the pinstripe phase, radios, fog lights, and I was big on tinting for a while. I've tried to rein it in now though. Maybe it's a youth thing? Seems to be.

That should have been eraser. ;)

I've just a dental implant put in, and I've been told to not brush that quadrant, for a couple of weeks. I'm seriously thinking about putting a sticky note on the bathroom mirror, warning. It's just too dang easy to forget.

The plural for Prius is Pri. Some call it Prii. Now even the spell checker disagrees with me!

I can;t believe the upset about the beeps. If you don't like the beeps there are ways to shut it down. There are many things in the Prius that you or the dealer can change all with the government approval. You won't get a ticket for it. The government made Toyota beep the reverse because they felt it would improve safety. I don't think it is a hazard or a safety factor.

If I classified luxury I would place heated mirrors far down the list for luxury, there are far more things I would call luxury at the top my list.

I knew sooner or later somebody would catch me on my misspelling.

That merely time-shifts the issue and changes the targets.

I found and installed a beeping, backup light in our 2003 Prius. Then noticed at least one pedestrian who stepped behind our Prius when I was trying to back out.

Personally I want crossing, rear view cameras that:
    • show the area between rear bumper and curbs
    • show approaching traffic left and right
It would be interesting if there is data showing pedestrian noise generators actually changes pedestrian accident rates.

    Now this might work!

Two pair that cross in front and behind the car . . . use motor oil for the smoke.

I keep reminding my young Daughter to always double-check in each direction before crossing any road or walking in a parking lot as there are cars like daddy's that you can't hear…

Another rule of thumb I tell her is to pay extra attention to the the red lights on the back of cars if she's in a parking lot and to steer clear as someone will probably be backing out soon..
